서부의 부호 J.W. 그랜트(J.W. Grant : 랄프 벨라미 분)는 사랑하는 미모의 아내 마리아(Maria Grant : 클로디아 카디날 분)가 멕시코의 예수라고 불리우는 혁명 투사 라자(Jesus Raza : 잭 팰런스 분)에게 납치되자 전 미국을 통틀어 전투의 귀재들을 수소문하기 시작한다. 그리하여 명석한 두뇌의 전술가 리코(Henry "Rico" Fardan : 리 마틴 분)와 서부 제일의 맨헌터 에렌가드(Hans Ehrengard : 로버트 라이안 분), 다이나마이트의 독보적인 기술가이자 건맨인 돌월스(Bill Dolworth : 버트 랭카스터 분), 그리고 사막을 훤히 알고 양궁에 뛰어난 실력을 갖추고 있는 제이크(Jake Sharp : 우디 스트로드 분) 등 4인의 프로페셔날을 고용한다. 라자가 몸값으로 요구한 10만달러를 그들이 목숨을 걸고 마리아를 구해오는 조건으로 지불하겠다는 그랜트의 솔깃한 제안에 이들 4인의 프로들은 라자의 아지트가 있는 멕시코 사막으로 향하는데... 먼저 뛰어난 지략가인 리코는 함정을 설치하고 라자의 흔적을 뒤쫓기 시작한다. 이윽고 당도한 라자의 아지트, 한때는 멕시코의 혁명 투사였지만 돈때문에어쩔 수 없이 존경하는 라자를 죽여야 하는 리코와 돌월스는 차마 그를 죽이지 못하고 몸부림치는 마리아를 끌고 나온다. 리코의 뛰어난 작전으로 라자 일당의 거치른 추격전을 겨우 따돌리고 마리아를 그랜트에게 데려가는데 성공하지만...

감옥에 갇힌 친구를 구하려다 오히려 쫓기게 되는 카우보이를 소재로 만든 영화. 결국은 추격자의 총탄에 쓰러지는 한 카우보이의 이야기가 사라져가는 서부 시대의 희생자로 그려지고 있다. 서부 영화 치고는 자동차와 헬리콥터가 등장하는 이색적인 화면이 쫓기는 외로운 한 카우보이의 뒷모습에 쓸쓸하게 투영이 되어 저물어가는 서부 시대의 애환을 더 더욱 애처롭게 묘사하고 있는 수작이다.

Maria San Carlos, the only daughter of a wealthy landowner, is betrothed to Escobar, a General in the Mexican Revolution, but she does not love him. Escobar sends a mixed gang of Americans and Mexicans to capture her and bring her to him. Complications ensue when an American cowboy, who had been hitching a ride with Maria's entourage and has his gold stolen by the gang, pursues them across the desert.
