Set in the Clapham district of south London, England, the film is inspired by true events. The paths of several men intersect during a dramatic thirty-six hours in which their lives are changed forever.

데릭(Derek: 키아누 리브스 분)은 하버드 대학 진학을 꿈꾸는 산타루시아 고등학교 3년생이다. 그런데 요즈음은 매일같이 캠퍼스내에서 폭력, 강도, 강간, 마약밀매 사건이 발생하자 학교당국에선 골치를 앓고 있다. 말 그대로 무법천지. 전 날 밤에도 괴한이 침입하여 학교기물을 부수고 물건을 훔쳐가는 난동이 발생하자 교내에서는 이 문제를 두고 회의를 여는 등 대책마련에 부심한다. 데릭의 반에서도 교내 규율과 질서를 잡아야 한다는 목소리가 높아지는데. 그즈음 교장 선생님은 우수한 학생들을 모아놓고 중대한 발표를 한다. 정부나 군대, 경찰에 학교 치안 문제를 맡기든가, 아니면 우수한 학생들이 모여 학교생활에 본보기가 되든가 양자택일을 해야 할 때라고. 연설이 끝난 후 데렉과과 그의 친구들은 교장선생님의 생각이 학생 자경단 조직에 있다고 생각하고 학교를 위하여 일종의 자율 결사대를 조직해야겠다고 생각한다. 이름하여 '정의의 친구들'. '정의의 친구들'은 그들이 응징해야 할 명단까지 만들어 두고 정의의 참맛이 무엇인지 보여주기 위해 마치 KKK단처럼 활동하며 표적대상들을 하나 둘씩 차례로 없애기 시작하는데. 어느날 데릭은 여자친구 크리스티(Christie: 로리 로그린 분)와 함께 캠퍼스를 거닐던 중 '정의의 친구들'에 의해 칼에 찔린 한 학생을 발견하곤 데릭 또한 그 조직 멤버라는 것을 알아 차린다. 아연실색한 크리스티는 데릭을 멀리하고. '정의의 친구들'의 활동은 그들 스스로가 영웅심리에 도취되어 이성을 잃고 점점 과격해진다. 그들의 행동이 법이요 곧 규칙이었다. 이제 경찰도 '정의의 친구들'을 알아내기 위해 혈안이 되어 있고 이 사실을 안 데릭은 '정의의 친구들'을 설득하나 그들은 이대로 물러설순 없다며 끝장을 내자고 주장한다. 크리스티와 빅터(Victor: 키퍼 서덜랜드 분)가 가깝게 지내자 데릭의 괴로워하는 모습을 본 '정의의 친구들'은 빅터에게까지 손을 뻗쳐 그를 살해하기 위해 폭탄을 설치하는데.

A misguided scientist enables an alien from Venus named Zontar to come to earth in order to "help solve man's problems". However, as soon as Zontar arrives on Earth, it quickly becomes obvious that the three-eyed, bat-winged, skeletal black creature has a hidden agenda.

When he is shot and paralyzed for life Margot must carry on dancing well into her sixties in order to pay for his costly treatment though she still collaborates with Rudolf in the occasional ballet.
