This incredibly disturbing story follows the exploitation of an apprentice butcher, Hermógenes, and his trial after he murders his boss in broad daylight. Hermógenes, a farmhand from northern Argentina, relocates to Buenos Aires in search of a better life for himself and his young wife, but soon finds himself at the mercy of a corrupt boss. The film is based on a thorough investigation of a real event that happened in Buenos Aires 10 years ago. Almost every scene in the film is inspired by real facts or based on well documented daily practices of the “meat business” and its environment. 낯선 세계의 기묘한 노인 무리를 찍은 이 작품은, 이들의 가학적이고 원초적인 행동들을 여과 없이 보여준다. 수시로 등장하는 방뇨·자위·반달리즘 등 도덕성의 한계를 넘어선 행위들을 이해하긴 쉽지 않으나, 마치 로우파이 비디오테이프 같은 느낌의 화면을 따라가다 보면 이들이 그들만의 세상에서 그들만의 유희를 즐기고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그 유희를 관찰하는 감독의 시선은, 사진작가 다이안 아버스가 피사체를 바라보던 시선과 닮았다.
