'배스커빌가의 사냥개'는 셜록 홈즈의 원작 자체도 추리에 크게 신경을 덜 쓴 느낌의 작품입니다. 셜록 홈즈가 보통 왓슨에게 일부 단서만 알려주다가 범인을 늦게 밝히는데 이 원작에서는 비교적 빨리 범인을 왓슨에게 바로 밝힙니다. 범인이 누구냐가 중요한 내용이 아니라 전설속의 마견의 정체에 더 관심을 쏠리게 하는 내용이니까요. 해머 영화사의 이 작품에서 사실 마견의 활용을 꽤 기대했는데 마견의 등장분량은 굉장히 짧습니다. 그래도 39년 영화와는 달리 헨리 경을 덮쳐서 목을 물어뜯을 뻔한 장면을 만들기는 하죠. 그런데 실루엣으로라도 좀 보여주고 그랬더라면 좀 더 음산한 느낌을 주었을텐데 그렇지도 않습니다. 그냥 끝에 잠깐 등장하고 있지요.

리포터와 프로듀서로 직업을 바꾼 다프네와 프레드는 가면을 쓴 악당들이 귀신 행세를 하는 사건들을 취재하는 것이 지겨워져 진짜 귀신이 나오는 집을 찾아 시리즈를 제작하려 한다. 각자의 일을 하며 지내는 벨마와 스쿠비, 섀기까지 한데 뭉쳐 장소를 물색하던 이들은, 리나라는 여자가 문스카 섬의 자신이 사는 저택에 귀신들이 많다고 하자 섬을 찾아가기로 한다. 벽에 이상한 글씨가 쓰여지고 공중 부양되거나 좀비들이 출현하는 등 저택에서 수상한 일들이 일어나자 이들은 본격적인 귀신 찾기에 나서고, 결국 저택의 주인인 시몬느와 리나가 2백년 전의 사람이지만 사람들의 생명력을 빨아들여 영원한 생명을 얻었다는 사실을 알게 된다.

캔디맨에 관한 전설은 1890년에 시작된다. 흑인 노예의 아들인 다니엘은 그림에 뛰어나 백인 주인의 딸인 캐롤라인의 초상화를 그리다가 둘은 인종과 신분을 넘어 사랑에 빠지고, 캐롤라인의 임신으로 두 사람의 관계가 세상에 알겨진다. 백인 주민들은 다니엘을 잡아다가 그의 팔을 자르고, 옷을 벗겨 온몸에 꿀을 바른 뒤 다니엘에게 캐롤라인의 손거울로 모습을 비춰주며 캔디맨이라 놀린다. 다니엘은 수천마리의 벌떼에 쏘여 죽게되고 다니엘의 영혼은 누군가 캔디맨이라는 이름을 다섯번 불러 자신의 영혼을 꺼내어 주기를 기다린다. 세월은 흘러 뉴 올리언즈의 어느 마을, 이곳에서는 원인 모를 살인 사건이 연속하여 일어나 무참히 찢겨져 살해당한 시체들이 발견된다. 마을의 국민학교 선생인 애니의 아버지도 처참히 시체로 발견되고 동네에는 이 사건들이 전설 속의 캔디맨 소행이란 소문이 떠돈다. 애니의 오빠 애튼은 사건의 용의자로 지목되어 재판을 받게 된다. 애니가 가르치는 학생 중 한명인 매튜는 캔디맨의 존재를 믿고 반 아이들이 캔디맨의 전설에 심취한 매튜를 놀리자 애니는 매튜를 안심시키기 위해 거울을 보고 캔디맨의 이름을 다섯번 부른다. 하지만 그날밤 애니의 앞에 나타난 캔디맨은 애니의 몸속에 자신의 피가 흐른다는 것과 자신의 세계에 들어오라는 소리를 하며 애니의 남편을 죽이는데...
