한 남자(존)가 시체 더미에서 정신을 차리게 된다. 존의 몸은 굳어 움직이기 힘들고 자신의 이름이 뭔지, 어디서 왔는지 등 아무 기억을 하지 못한다. 시체더미에 있는 존이 갖고 있는 것은 총 한자루와 라이터뿐이다. 그때 한 여자가 시체 더미의 구덩이 위에서 밧줄을 내려준다. 존은 밧줄을 타고 위로 올라가 여자를 따라 낫선 집에 들어 가게 된다. 그 집에는 5명의 생존한 사람이 있었고 그 5명의 사람 모두 자신이 어디서 왔는지 기억을 하지 못한다. 그렇게 5명의 사람은 서로를 믿지 못하고 의심을 하며 잃어 버린 기억을 찾으려 애를 쓴다. 일행들은 의문의 괴한으로 부터 공격을 받아 죽거나 다치게 된다. 존과 그 일행은 기억을 찾으려 애를 쓰고 하나 둘 씩 기억을 찾게하는 단서들을 밝견하게 된다. 존이 있는 섬에서 좀비 치료제를 개발하던 중 기억을 잃게 되었다는 알게 된다. 하지만 다가오는 일자까지 치료제를 만들지 못하면 군부대가 투입되어 모든 것을 정리한다는 것을 알게 된 존은 그곳에서의 탈출을 시도하려고 하고 결국 탈출에 성공을 한다.

At a convention, medical researcher Michel Touzac goes with colleagues to see stage caricaturist Targel, whose assistant Florence recognizes him...and attempts suicide. Playwright James Lee adapted his off-Broadway play for the screen in this high-strung adaptation, directed by Joseph Anthony. In this simplistic, backroom show-business-success saga, Anthony Franciosa plays Sam, a struggling young actor who will forsake his family and take any type of menial job in order to become a Broadway star. Dean Martin is on hand as Maury, an aspiring director also trying to claw his way up the ladder of success. When Maury gets his big break, Sam wants a part in his show, but when Maury, who is unwilling to cast Sam in the production, turns down Sam's request, Sam seduces and marries Maury's girlfriend (Shirley MacLaine). In spite of everything, Maury wants his girl back, and Sam agrees to a divorce on the stipulation that Maury cast him as the star in his next show. Once again, Maury reneges and, before Sam can exact his revenge, Uncle Sam comes to the rescue and he is drafted into the army.

The Fight for Life was documentary filmmaker Pare Lorentz' first "dramatic" film, utilizing the talents of several top New York stage actors. A tribute to the Chicago Maternity Center and its efforts to provide the best possible care for destitute mothers, the film is based on the book of the same name by Paul de Kruif. Myron McCormick plays the largest role as a dedicated intern, while others in the cast include such theatrical heavywrights as Will Geer, Dudley Digges and Dorothy Adams. The film's many vignettes range from the tragic (a mother dying in childbirth in the opening scene) to the exultant (another mother rescued from the brink of death in a disease-ridden tenement). Filmed in Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland, Fight for Life is a worthwhile effort, though Lorentz seems more comfortable with the "actuality" scenes than with the dramatized passages.
