The Buffalo (2015)

Fiery, dark-haired Stella, an intense auto mechanic, and nervous, blonde Eleonora are young and in love. They operate a gas station peacefully, until Eleonora's mother appears and voices her disapproval of their romance.

Peter and Chris, two young American friends in their late 20s, go from South Dakota to California on a scooter, and as they travel across the American landscape they see their country through different eyes, ranging from Peter's cynically nihilistic point of view, to Chris' high expectations and romantic notions of the United States.

아내에게 이혼당한 로베르트는 집과 직장을 버리고 나온다. 여행 중 영사기 수리기사 브루노와 만나게 되고 두 사람은 함께 동서독 국경 지대를 여행한다. 국경 지대의 황량한 도시들을 순회하며 쇠락해가는 시골 극장들의 영사기를 수리하는 것이 브루노의 일이다. 두 사람은 트럭 안에서 음악을 함께 들으며 점차 가까워진다. 브루노는 자신의 트럭이 작업장이자 숙소 역할을 하기 때문에 어디에도 자신의 집이란 없고 길 자체가 그의 삶의 터전이다. 브루노는 여행 도중 자신의 옛 집을 찾아가는데 폐허가 된 채 강 한가운데 있는 섬에 고립돼 버려져 있다. 그렇게 그에게는 전혀 머물 곳이란 없다. 한편, 로베르트는 브루노보다 극단적인 상태에서 자신의 처지와 싸우고 있다. 강에 뛰어들어 죽고자 하는 그의 행동이 처연하게 다가온다. 그렇게 그들은 여행 중 만남과 헤어짐을 반복한다.

윌로씨는 알트라 자동차에서 독창적인 캠핑카를 디자인한다. 캠핑카의 원형을 암스테르담의 자동차쇼에 운반하기 위해 윌로씨는 홍보 이사인 젊은 마리아와 함께 떠나게 된다. 그러나 화물 자동차가 계속 고장이 나서 시간은 계속 지체가 되고...더 이상 윌로씨를 스크린에 등장시키고 싶지 않았던 타티였지만, 스타가 없이는 자본을 얻기가 힘든 상황에서 다시 윌로씨를 주인공으로 한 작품이다. 자동차 회사에 디자이너로 근무하는 윌로씨는 새 캠핑카를 모터쇼에 출품하기 위해 암스테르담까지 옮겨가야만 한다. 그러나 유럽의 교통사정은 여의치 않고, 일이 크게 확대되어 경찰 신세까지 져야만 하는 상황에 이른다. 현대사회가 만들어내는 색채와 형태들로부터 아름다움을 이끌어내는 감독의 능력도 돋보인다.

치과 의사인 ‘더그’와 슈퍼모델 부인을 둔 돈 많은 ‘우디’, 마누라 바가지에 폭발 일보직전이 ‘바비’, 그리고 여자친구 하나 없는 소심남 ‘더들리’는 주말마다 바이크를 타고 도시 근교로 나가는 것이 유일한 낙이다. 그러던 어느 날, 평소 콜레스테롤 수치로 인해 음식조절을 해야 했던 ‘더그’는 인내심의 바닥을 드러내고 남 부러울 것 없던 ‘우디’는 하루아침에 파산하게 된다. 여기에 삶 그 자체가 고역인 ‘바비’와 ‘더들리’가 합세하여 위기에 몰린 네 명의 아저씨들은 잠시나마 자유를 만끽하게 위해 장거리 바이크 여행을 감행한다. 핸드폰도 버리고 찌질한 일상도 버리고 거침없이 도로를 질주 하던 네 명의 중년 바이크족들은 작은 마을의 술집에서 폭주족 갱단 델 퓨에고스와 마주치게 된다. 한 물간 낯선 바이크족을 달가워 할리 없는 델 퓨에고스의 심기를 건드린 네 명의 중년아저씨들. 평온한 여행을 예상했건만 갱단과 얽힌 사건은 점점 걷잡을 수 없이 커져만 가고 아저씨들의 무모한 여행은 아찔한 상황만이 계속해서 이어지는데…

디디는 배운 것 없고 어리숙하지만 정직하게 살아가는 평범한 사람이다. 트럭 운전 면허에 간신히 합격하여 운전수로 일을 하게 된 그는 어느 날, 화학 화물이 든 드럼통을 프랑스로 운반하는 일을 맡게 된다. 디디는 트럭에 싣고 가는 화물에 일어나는 모든 일에 대해서 책임을 지는 조건을 단 계약서에 서명을 한 후 일을 시작한다. 한편 화학 폐기물을 인수하려고 대기하고 있던 쓰레기 처리업자 레온과 마르셀은 경찰이 따라 오는 것을 보고 디디가 타고 오는 트럭을 중간에 멈춰 세우려고 한다. 하지만 드럼통 속에 못쓰는 기름이 들은 것으로만 생각하고 있는 디디는 마르셀의 말을 듣지 않는데...
