시놉시스
한때의 꽃 같은 젊음도 결국은 세월과 더불어 늙고 병들어 간다. 누구나 젊은 날의 아름다웠던 추억이 가슴속에 담겨 있으며 이제 죽음을 앞둔 나이에 하나씩 하나씩 옛 추억을 회상하며 때론 그리움에 때론 절망감에 가슴 아파한다. 여기 나이 들어 여생을 마무리 하려하는 두 자매가 바다가 내다보이는 별장에서 젊었던 시절 바로 앞의 바다에서 1년에 한 차례씩 지나가던 고래들을 구경하기 위해 기다리고 있다. 근처에 한때 남작의 지위를 지녔던 노신사가 등장하고 늙음 앞에 무력해진 지난날의 지위, 미모, 권세는 이제 간곳없고 단지 사람이 그리운 이 노인들은 아주 사소한 일상을 언쟁하거나 또한 즐거워한다. 이제 앞이 보이지 않는 동생 사라의 사사건건 날이 선 예민함 앞에서 같이 늙어 가면서도 늘 이해해주고 가르치려 드는 언니 리비. 그리고 40년 지기 이웃의 티샤. 이미 떠나 버린 남편을 그리워하고 결혼기념일을 챙기는 그들에게 황혼은 지극히 숭고하고 아름답다. 여러 차례의 갈등구조 끝에 동생 리비는 언니의 손을 잡아끌며 어린 시절 보았던 고래를 보러가자 한다. 절벽 끝에 서서 고래를 기다리지만 이제 더 이상 고래는 오지 않는다. 그저 모든 것은 가슴속에 남아 있을 뿐이다.
