히로시마 출신의 그림 그리기를 좋아하는 한 평범한 소녀 ‘스즈’는 열여덟 살이 되어 산 너머 동네의 ‘호죠 슈사쿠’와 결혼한다. 평범하고도 따뜻한 가정을 꾸리던 ‘스즈’의 삶에 태평양 전쟁이라고 불리는 전쟁이 들이닥치게 되고, ‘스즈’에게 익숙하고 소중했던 것들이 하나둘 빛을 잃어가는데…

누가 봐도 아름다운 부부 가후쿠와 오토. 우연히 아내의 외도를 목격한 가후쿠는 이유를 묻지 못한 채 갑작스럽게 아내의 죽음을 맞이하게 된다. 2년 후 히로시마의 연극제에 초청되어 작품의 연출을 하게 된 가후쿠. 그는 그곳에서 자신의 전속 드라이버 미사키를 만나게 된다. 말없이 묵묵히 가후쿠의 차를 운전하는 미사키와 오래된 습관인 아내가 녹음한 테이프를 들으며 대사를 연습하는 가후쿠. 조용한 차 안에서 두 사람은 점점 마음을 열게 되고, 서로가 과거의 아픔에서 벗어나지 못한 것을 알게 된다. 그리고 눈 덮인 홋카이도에서 내면에 깊숙이 자리 잡은 서로의 슬픔을 들여다보게 되는데….

영화 <평화>를 촬영하기 위해 히로시마에 온 프랑스 여배우 '그녀'는 일본인 건축가, '그'와 우연히 만나 이틀간의 관계를 가진다. 그러나 히로시마에 머물러 달라는 남자의 청을 무언가에 사로잡혀 있는 듯한 그녀는 거절한다. 그녀에겐 고향 느베르에서 자신의 첫사랑인 독일군 병사와의 사랑의 대가로 죽음을 목격하고, 그 사랑의 이름으로 지하실에 감금되어 끔찍한 고통을 겪은 상처가 존재한다. 사랑으로 인한 좌절과 고통, 그리고 절망이라는 이름의 과거가 떠나질 않는다. 원자폭탄이 투하된 도시, 히로시마에서 그녀의 고통스러웠던 과거가 현실과 중첩되면서 그와 그녀의 침묵의 대화는 이어진다.

For this film we have tracked down people who made the bomb, people who dropped the bomb, and people who were in Hiroshima – some less than half a mile from ground zero -when the bomb fell on their city. Many of the witnesses are in their 90s and this will be the last time they will be able to tell their extraordinary stories. The Day They Dropped The Bomb is told through witness recollections, rare archive film and photographs shot at the time. The documentary will be broadcast for the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima next year by ITV and in America by the Smithsonian Channel.

Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk navigated the first atomic bombing mission in Hiroshima, Japan, and later participated in the first Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi is a hibakusha. A survivor of both atomic bomb blasts in 1945. First at Hiroshima, then again at Nagasaki. Now nearing 90, Yamaguchi finally speaks out. Breaking taboos of shame and sorrow, he responds to a call to fight for a world without nuclear weapons by telling his story, so that no one else will ever have to tell one like it again. Twice reconstructs Yamaguchi’s experiences in 1945 Japan, interviews him on the after-effects of exposure and documents the last five years of the late-blooming activist’s life.

With the passing of Nakazawa Keiji in December 2012, Barefoot Gen’s Hiroshima now stands as the manga artist’s last message of peace to the world. Mr. Nakazawa recounts his life, from the aftermath of the atomic bombing up until the days he created his acclaimed manga series Barefoot Gen (Hadashi no Gen), by exploring sites of painful memories in Hiroshima. Through Mr. Nakazawa’s story, and his original art work, Barefoot Gen’s Hiroshima illuminates the nature of war and nuclear weapons, urging us not to repeat the past.
