1973년 뉴욕시의 살충 구제원 빌은 시간이 남을 때면 아내 존과 마리화나를 피우면서 시간을 보내곤 한다. 그러던 어느날 자신의 살충약이 없어져 사장과 다투게 되고, 경찰로부터 마약을 상용하고 있다는 혐의를 받게 된다. 마약을 끊기 위해 밴웨이라는 의사를 찾아가서 도움을 구하지만 그가 권해준 약물은 오히려 그의 증세를 악화시키고 환각의 세계로 뒤섞이게 만든다. 빌은 별별 이상한 사람들이 들끓는 도시로 긴 여행을 하게 된다. 이곳에선 타이프라이터가 말을 걸어오고, 죽은 아내가 다른 사람의 아내로 살고 있다. 빌이 이 지옥을 빠져나가려 할 수록 더욱 미로 속으로 빠져들기만 한다.
