I know it’s not only me, because there are others out there…” ‘I Don’t Protest, I Just Dance In My Shadow’ is a short visual essay film by artist animator, Jessica Ashman, about navigating the visual art and animation world as a black face in a white space. Using animation and recorded interviews of eight other women of colour artists, ‘I Don’t Protest, I Just Dance In My Shadow’ is an abstract confessional from the director herself: a visualisation of the joy, frustration, wishes and dreams of what it feels like to be a black women and a woman of colour artist, creating and existing.

영국이 노예무역의 중심지 역할을 하던 1769년, 해군 제독 존 린지(매튜 구드)는 흑인 여인과의 사이에서 낳은 어린 딸을 수석 재판관 맨스필드 백작(톰 윌킨슨)에게 맡긴다. 숙부인 맨스필드 백작의 보호 아래에서만 딸이 정당한 대우를 받을 수 있다고 생각한 것이다. 맨스필드 부부의 양녀가 된 다이도 엘리자베스 벨(구구 음바사-로)은 동갑내기 사촌과 함께 훌륭한 교육을 받으면서 성장한다. 그렇지만 사생아이자 혼혈아인 벨은 맨스필드 가문의 지위를 마음껏 누리지는 못한다. 그러던 어느 날, 벨은 노예들의 인권을 위해 힘쓰는 법률가 지망생 존 다비니에(샘 리드)를 만나면서 전환점을 맞이한다. 다비니에를 통해 수많은 노예들의 죽음과 관련된 사건의 전말을 알게 된 벨은, 자신의 정체성을 자각하고 노예제도의 부당함에 눈뜨는 한편, 그와 사랑에 빠진다. 하지만 다비니에는 가족이 정해준 여자와 약혼을 한 상태. 이에 벨은 마음에도 없는 귀족 청년의 청혼을 받아들이는데…
당연한 것이 당연하지 않았던 그때, 자유와 평등을 위해 목숨을 걸고 싸웠던 흑인 여성 해리엇 터브먼의 실화를 담았다. 해리엇은 미국 남부 메릴랜드에서 노예의 딸로 태어나 북부 필라델피아로 탈출했다. 그녀는 노예들의 탈출을 돕는 조직 ‘지하철로’에서 길을 인도하는 ‘차장’으로 활동하며 약 70여 명의 노예들을 자유로 이끌었고, 남북전쟁에 종군하여 콤바히 강 작전에서 750여 명의 노예들을 구출하기도 했다. "자유가 아니면 죽음을 달라."라는 그들의 외침은 즉 살아가는 것과 자유로운 것이 같다는 의미였다. 하지만 그녀는 살아 있음에도 불구하고 자유롭지 못했고, 불평등에 대한 의문은 행동을 위한 의지가 되었다. 영화는 상처받은 영혼이었던 해리엇이 다른 동료들과 연대하며 강인한 지도자로 변모하는 과정에 집중한다.

Alston, "a voice as dark and sweet as molasses", as described by the Financial Times, was born in Washington, DC and has been living in Vienna for almost 30 years. She is sure: "Those four icons help you explain what jazz is and even the history of jazz right along."

In their lives and music, blues women presented themselves as strong, independent women who lived hard lives and were unapologetic about their unconventional choices in clothes, recreational activities, and bed partners. Blues singers disseminated a Black feminism that celebrated emotional resilience and sexual pleasure, no matter the source.
