자전거 도둑

2차 대전 직후 이탈리아의 수도 로마의 거리. 오랫동안 일자리를 구하지 못하고 거리를 배회하던 안토니오는 우연히 직업 소개소를 통해 거리에서 벽보를 붙이는 일을 맡는다. 그러나 그 일을 하기 위해선 자전거가 필요했고 이 사실을 안 아내 마리아는 남편의 직업을 위해 자신이 소중하게 간직했던 침대 시트를 전당포에 맡기고 자전거를 구입한다. 한편 직업을 갖게 된 안토니오와 그의 아들 브르노는 기쁨을 참지 못하지만 아뿔싸! 이게 웬일? 이튿날 안토니오가 출근하여 벽보를 붙이는 사이 한 사내가 자전거를 타고 도망치는 것이 아닌가?

룻 이야기

가난한 집안 형편 때문에 다섯살 때 모압의 왕궁에 팔려간 룻은 여사제가 되기 위한 교육을 받으며 성장한다. 케모쉬라는 우상을 섬기는 모압은 해마다 어린 소녀를 재물로 바치는데, 성인이 된 룻은 이 일을 담당하게 된다. 그러나 유대인 청년 말론을 만나게 된 그녀는 모압의 우상 숭배에 대한 의구심을 품고 의식을 저지하는 소동을 벌이게 된다. 게다가 룻이 여사제의 규율을 어기고 말론과 사랑에 빠진 사실이 발각되자 말론의 아버지와 형제는 처형을 당하고, 말론은 채석장 종신 노동형에 처해진다. 하지만 말론 역시 부상으로 곧 숨을 거두게 되고 룻은 말론의 어머니와 함께 유대인들이 살고 있는 베들레헴 마을로 떠나기로 한다.
