칼로 사람을 찌르고 교도소에 갇힌 12살 소년 자인은 부모를 상대로 소송을 제기한다. 신분증도 없고, 출생증명서도 없어서 언제 태어났는지도 모르는 자인. 법정에 선 자인에게 왜 부모를 상대로 소송을 제기하는지 판사가 묻자 자인이 대답한다. ‘태어나게 했으니까요. 이 끔찍한 세상에 태어나게 한 게 그들이니까요.’

1972년, 레바논 베이루트의 외교관 ‘메이슨’은 부인과 함께 레바논 소년 ‘카림’을 돌본다. 그러던 어느 날, ‘카림’의 형이 뮌헨 참사 주범으로 밝혀지고, 때마침 습격한 그의 형 ‘라미’의 테러로 ‘메이슨’의 부인이 살해되고 만다. 10년 뒤 현재, 테러 사건 이후 폐인이 된 ‘메이슨’은 거절 못 할 제안에 의해, CIA 요원과 테러범의 목숨을 맞바꾸는 사상 초유의 인질 협상 작전에 투입되어 베이루트를 다시 찾는데…

어느 날, 옛 친구와 함께 술집에 들른 영화감독 아리는 계속 반복되는 친구의 악몽에 관해 듣게 된다. 매일 밤 꿈에 어김없이 등장해 자신을 쫓는 정체 모를 26마리의 사나운 개들에 관한 이야기. 두 남자는 이 악몽이 80년대 초 레바논 전쟁 당시 그들이 수행했던 이스라엘 군에서의 임무와 어떠한 연관이 있다고 결론 내린다. 오랜 시간 친구와 대화를 나누던 중 아리는 자신이 당시의 일들을 전혀 기억하지 못한다는 것을 깨닫고, 잃어버린 기억을 찾기 위해서 전세계를 돌며 자신의 옛 친구들과 동료들을 찾아 나선다. 아리가 과거의 비밀을 더 깊이 파헤쳐갈수록 때로는 선명하게, 때로는 초현실적인 이미지의 형태로 그의 기억들도 하나씩 떠오르기 시작하는데….

“테러에 대해서라면, 도덕 따윈 없다.” 모사드, 아만과 함께 이스라엘의 3대 정보기관으로 꼽히는 신베트(Shin Bet)는 국내 정보를 담당하며 팔레스타인의 테러와 싸워 왔다. 영화는 무인폭격기가 직접 촬영한 폭파 장면 등 실제 현장을 담은 자료들과 애니메이션 기법을 통해 대테러 전쟁의 뒷이야기를 생생하게 그려낸다. 특히 지난 30년간 조직을 이끌었던 6명의 전임 수장들이 그동안 어디서도 들을 수 없던 신베트의 이야기를 직접 들려준다. (2013년 제10회 EBS 국제다큐영화제)

In April, 1975, civil war breaks out; Beirut is partitioned along a Moslem-Christian line. Tarek is in high school, making Super 8 movies with his friend, Omar. At first the war is a lark: school has closed, the violence is fascinating, getting from West to East is a game. His mother wants to leave; his father refuses. Tarek spends time with May, a Christian, orphaned and living in his building. By accident, Tarek goes to an infamous brothel in the war-torn Olive Quarter, meeting its legendary madam, Oum Walid. He then takes Omar and May there using her underwear as a white flag for safe passage. Family tensions rise. As he comes of age, the war moves inexorably from adventure to tragedy.

해안 지역의 작은 마을 므샤칼에서 존경 받는 음악 교사 ‘레바’는 학창시절 첫사랑 ‘라라’와의 결혼에 성공하고 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않을 아들 ‘가디’가 탄생한다. 하지만 특수 장애를 안고 태어난 ‘가디’는 매일 밤 발코니에서 괴성에 가까운 노래를 부르다 ‘악마’로 불리기 시작하고, 주민들은 ‘가디’를 내몰기 위한 항의를 시작한다. 아들을 보호 시설로 보낼 수 없는 아빠 ‘레바’는 마을 사람들의 마음을 돌리기 위해 작전을 세운다. 과연 ‘가디’가 마을 사람들을 구원할 천사라는 행복한 거짓말에 성공하고, 무사히 마을에 남을 수 있을까?

Patrick Perrault, a photo-journalist covering the war in Beirut in the late 1980s, is himself caught up in the hostilities when one day he is picked up and bundled into a car at gun-point. Blind-folded, he is taken to an unknown location where he discovers that he is being taken hostage by Lebanese guerrillas.

Beirut resident Soraya is drawn to two men: daredevil photographer Nabil and Talal, who must embrace his feudal heritage when his father is kidnapped.

레바논의 베이루트 항구에 도착한 제이나는 한 달 넘게 이스라엘의 폭격을 받은 남부로 가려하지만 누구도 도와주겠다는 사람이 없다. 그 때 택시 기사, 토니가 접근해 300달러라는 큰돈을 요구하지만 다급한 제이나는 토니의 택시를 타기로 한다. 사실 제이나는 두바이에서 이혼 소송 중인데 여름 동안 여섯 살 난 아들 카림을 레바논에 사는 언니, 마하의 집에 맡겼던 것이다. 차창 밖으로는 잔혹한 폭격의 증거가 펼쳐지고 두 사람은 난민 수용소를 찾아다니며 카림과 마하를 찾는다. 하지만 수용소와 거리에서 만난 사람들이 들려주는 증언은 제니아를 더욱 불안하게 만든다. 간신히 언니의 집에 도착한 제니아는 언니는 폭격으로 죽었지만 카림은 프랑스인 기자가 데려갔다는 말을 듣고 아들을 찾기 위해 티레로 향한다. 하지만 모든 것이 폐허가 된 레바논에서는 차에 기름 넣는 것도 쉽지 않고 두 사람의 여정은 고난이 계속 된다. 온갖 우역곡절을 넘어 카림이 있다는 수도원으로 향하는 두 사람. 과연 이들은 제니아의 아들 카림을 찾을 수 있을 것인가...

레바논의 작은 마을에 사는 시각장애인 라비는 합창단에서 노래를 부르고 점자 문서를 편집하며 생계를 이어간다. 그러던 어느 날, 공연을 위해 여권 신청을 하러 갔다가 평생 갖고 다녔던 신분증이 가짜라는 것을 알게 되고, 그의 세상은 흔들리기 시작한다. 라비는 자신의 출생에 대한 정보를 찾기 위해 레바논 시골 지역을 여행하면서 다양한 사람들을 만나게 된다. 각자 나름의 사연을 지닌 이들은 라비에게 다채로운 질문거리를 들려주며 그의 정체에 대한 단서를 준다. 존재의 의미를 좇으며 깊이를 알 수 없는 공허함에 사로잡힌 라비는 자신의 서사가 레바논의 역사와 겹쳐져 있음을 깨닫는다.

During the Arab Spring, like many others of this new generation, local artists had high hopes for the future and took part in the protests. However, after years of turmoil and instability, young Arabs now have to challenge both old and new problems, being torn between feelings of disillusion and a vague hope for a better future.

Disillusioned with his life in the suburbs of segregated Beirut, Omar's unusual discovery lures him into the depth of the city. Immersed into a world that is so close yet so isolated from his reality, he finds himself struggling to keep his attachments, his sense of home.
