메이필드(Mayfield) 마을에 사는 레이 피터슨(Ray Peterson: 톰 행크스 분)은 휴가를 집에서 보내기로 작정하게 되는데, 한 달전에 이사온 괴상한 이웃 클로펙씨네 집에 신경이 쓰인다. 그 집은 도대체 이웃과 교류가 없는데다 밤이면 괴상한 소리까지 나는 것이었다. 한밤 중에 쓰레기를 차에다 실어서 집앞 쓰레기통에 버리기도 하고, 요란하게 모터를 돌리기도 하고, 뒤뜰을 파젖히기도 하는 등 수상한 일이 한 두가지가 아니다.그러던 중 이웃노인 월터씨가 갑자기 사라지는 사건까지 일어난다. 이웃들은 클로펙씨가 월터를 죽여 시체를 암매장한 게 아닌가 하는 생각까지 한다. 그러나 레이의 아내 캐롤(Carol Peterson: 캐리 피셔 분)은 이런 식으로 나가다가는 애매한 이웃을 범죄자로 오해하는 게 아닌가 싶어 여자들이 주동이 되어 남편을 데리고 그 집을 정식으로 방문한다.

성공을 꿈꾸며 할리우드로 이주해온 젊은 커플 스티븐과 넬. 루즈먼 암즈 아파트에 이사 온 이 신혼부부는 하루 빨리 성공하여 이 집을 떠나겠다는 계획을 세우며, 우선은 집을 개조한다. 그런데 이 괴기스런 분위기의 아파트에서 이상한 일이 일어나기 시작한다. 밤중에 끝없이 망치 소리가 들려오는가 하면 벽 속에서 사람의 이빨이 들어있는 오래된 상자가 발견된다. 아파트의 거주자들은 하나 둘 씩 사라지고 얼마 후엔 참혹한 시체로 발견된다. 넬은 두려워 견딜 수가 없지만 스티븐은 너무 바빠서 그녀에게 와줄 수 없는 처지다. 넬은 이 아파트의 설계에 숨겨진 난해한 기호들을 우연히 발견하고 이 기호들의 비밀을 찾아 나선다.

티벳에서 아편재배를 하며 그곳 아편시장의 한 구획을 갖고 있는 러만트 크랜스턴은 어느날 티벳의 성자인 털쿠의 부름을 받고 간다. 털쿠는 그의 몸속에 내재한 마성에 대해 언급하며 잉코라 불리웠던 그가 구원받는 길은 마성을 이용해 악과 싸우는 것뿐이라는 말을 하며 그가 잉코의 사부라고 자청한다. 털쿠의 가르침을 받은 잉코 즉, 러만트는 뉴욕으로 돌아와 악당들에게 벌을 주는 신비의 사나이 쉐도우가 된다. 그는 여러 도시에 비밀요원들을 배치해 악이 행해지는 곳은 어디든 나타나 징벌한다. 그러던 어느날 그는 마고 레인이라는 여인을 만나고, 티벳에서 징기스칸의 마지막 후예이며 털쿠의 제자였다는 슈완 칸이 나타난다. 그러나 칸은 러만트와는 달리 징기스칸이 이루지 못한 꿈인 세계정복을 꾀하며 러만트에게 합세할 것을 종용한다.

한 가족이 아주 고색이 창연한 고택으로 휴가를 보낼 이사를 오게 된다. 아주 작은 금액으로 집 주인은 너무도 순순히 이 집을 임대해 주는데 남편은 왠지 내키지 않아 하지만 아내인 마리안은 너무도 흡족해 한다. 어린 아들과 세 식구는 그렇게 이 집에서 때 아닌 휴가를 보내게 되는데 집 주인은 병든 늙은 노모를 2층에 두고 떠나며 보살펴 줄 것을 제안하였고 마리안은 그 약속을 지켜 매일 식사와 병간호를 한다. 단 누구도 그 방은 출입을 못하게 하며 병적으로 접근을 꺼려 하였고 날이 갈수록 이 집에선 이상한 기운이 감돈다.

Sepulchral Horace Femm and his obsessive, inhospitable sister Rebecca are the group's peculiar hosts. The house also holds surprises - and a brutish mute manservant named Morgan.

Mystery writer Cornelia Van Gorder has rented a country house called "The Oaks", which not long ago was the scene of some murders committed by a strange and violent criminal known as "The Bat". Meanwhile, the house's owner, bank president John Fleming, has recently embezzled one million dollars in securities and has hidden the proceeds in the house, but is killed before he can retrieve it.

1692년에 죽음에 처했던 마녀는 그녀의 박해자들에게 복수를 맹세하고, 그로부터 300년 후인 현재로 돌아와 그들의 자손을 처벌한다는 상큼한 내용. 삼백년 전 악마의 세상을 만들려다 저주만을 남긴 채 마을 목사에 의해 수장된 악마 루시퍼가 되살아나 연쇄 살인 사건을 저지른다. 루시퍼의 환생 아무도 믿지 않는 이 사실을 알게 된 교구 목사는 악마와 대결하여 그를 다시 수장시키지만 자신도 결국은 물 속으로 끌려들어가고 만다. 얼핏 종교적인 색채를 담고 있는 것 같지만 중세로부터 전해 오는 미신을 소재로 다뤄 다소 고전적인 분위기를 풍긴다는 것 외에는 별다른 종교적 의미가 없는 영화이다. 그렇지만 나름대로 짜임새 있는 구성이 보는 이로 하여금 긴장감을 주는 이 영화의 매력은 "터미네이터"의 한 장면을 연상시키는 라스트 장면이다. 교구 목사에 의해 다시 수장되는 악마의 손이 튀어나와 목사의 다리를 끌고 들어가는 장면은 안도의 숨을 쉬고 있던 관객들을 경악케 한다. 깜짝쇼나 기괴한 분장에서 스릴을 느끼는 사람에게는 시시하게 느껴질지 모르나 한번쯤 공포 영화를 보고 싶어 하는 사람에게는 제격이다.

Most of the film takes place in an old mansion where the characters participate in a séance while a storm rages outside. During their stay, the film uses an extensive flashback structure to reveal the various criminal acts that each have perpetrated. The man leading the seance (Luciano Pigozzi, the "Italian Peter Lorre") seems intent on holding them responsible for their various crimes, and his seemingly supernatural knowledge of their past gradually cracks the facade of each one. A classic Italian Gothic from Antonio Margheriti. German/Italian co-production, 'old dark house' style.
