1987년 1월, 경찰 조사를 받던 스물두 살 대학생이 사망한다. 박처장의 주도 하에 경찰은 시신 화장을 요청하지만, 사망 당일 당직이었던 최검사는 이를 거부하고 부검을 밀어붙인다. 단순 쇼크사인 것처럼 거짓 발표를 이어가는 경찰. 그러나 현장에 남은 흔적들과 부검 소견은 고문에 의한 사망을 가리키고, 사건을 취재하던 윤기자는 물고문 도중 질식사를 보도한다. 한편, 교도소에 수감된 조반장을 통해 사건의 진상을 알게 된 교도관 한병용은 이 사실을 수배 중인 재야인사에게 전달하기 위해 조카인 연희에게 위험한 부탁을 하게 되는데...

1957년 존 윈드햄의 소설 '미드위치의 침입자들(The Midwich Cuckoos)'을 영화화한 작품. 개봉 당시에는 큰 인기를 끌지는 못했지만, 이후1960년대 SF 공포 영화의 대표작으로 그 작품성을 인정받아 1995년에 다시 리메이크되기도 했다.

스위스 취리히의 유서 깊은 기차역이 철거되고 그 자리에 새로운 교도소와 치안센터가 건축되는 과정을 담는다. 감독은 본인의 집 창문에서 35mm 카메라를 이용해 이 과정을 7년 동안 촬영하면서, 자유로운 이동을 보장하던 철로의 확장성이 통제와 감금이라는 집약적 공간으로 변화하는 과정을 보여준다. 다이나믹한 이미지 위로 난민의 지위를 부여받지 못해 교도소에 입소 되기를 기다리는 이들의 증언이 입혀지고, 감독은 우리가 역사의 소멸, 그리고 완전한 안보라는 이름으로 역사가 대체되는 과정을 어떻게 다루는지를 보여준다. (서울환경영화제)
