프랑스 파리의 소르본느 대학생인 셀린느는 헝가리 부다페스트에 사는 할머니를 만나고, 가을 학기 개강에 맞춰 파리로 돌아가는 길이다. 셀린느는 옆자리의 독일인 부부가 시끄럽게 말다툼하는 소리를 피해 뒷좌석으로 자리를 옮기는데, 거기서 제시라는 미국인 청년과 우연히 얘기를 나누게 된다. 우연히 만난 그들은 짧은 시간에 서로에게 빠져든다. 그림 같은 도시와 꿈같은 대화 속에서 발견한 서로를 향한 강한 이끌림은 풋풋한 사랑으로 물들어 간다. 밤새도록 계속된 그들의 사랑 이야기 끝에 해가 떠오르기 시작하고 그들은 헤어져야만 하는데...

엘리자베스는 실연의 슬픔을 안고 남자친구의 집 열쇠를 카페 주인인 제레미에게 맡긴다. 제레미의 항아리에는 주인을 잃고 그대로 버려진 열쇠들이 한 가득이다. 엘리자베스는 매일 카페에 들러 자신처럼 누구의 선택도 받지 못하고 남겨진 블루베리 파이를 먹고, 제레미는 그녀와 점점 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 엘리자베스는 어느 날 갑자기 여행을 하기로 결심하고 아무 말 없이 뉴욕을 떠난다. 낯선 도시에서 맞닥뜨리는 상황들, 우연히 스쳐 지나가는 인연들의 이야기는 발신지없는 엽서가 되어 제레미에게 도착한다. 제레미는 여전히 카페에서 사람들을 기다리고, 엘리자베스는 이곳저곳의 바와 식당에서 일하며 사람들을 관찰하는 가운데 자신을 돌아본다.

프랭크는 뉴욕의 변두리에 위치한 병원에서 일하는 구급요원이다. 그는 주로 심야 시간대에 일하기 때문에 심신이 항상 지쳐있다. 그가 상대하는 환자는 마약으로 죽어가는 사람, 총격전과 칼부림으로 죽음을 눈앞에 둔 사람, 알콜에 중독되어 몸을 가누지 못하고 숨통이 끊어질 듯한 사람 등 뉴욕의 우범지대에서 흔히 만날 수 있는 사회적 패배자들이다. 심장마비로 죽어가는 노인을 병원으로 후송하던 날 프랭크는 노인의 딸 메리와 특별한 인연을 맺게 된다. 그녀로부터 얼마 전에 죽은 로즈라는 여자의 모습이 떠올랐기 때문이다. 그 후 로즈의 환영은 프랭크의 악몽의 중심을 차지한다. 창녀였던 로즈가 사경을 헤맬 때 프랭크가 구급 연락을 받고 달려갔지만 그녀는 끝내 목숨을 건지지 못했다. 그녀의 죽음을 자신의 잘못이라고 생각한 프랭크는 그 뒤로 악몽에 시달려왔던 것인데 천사처럼 나타난 메리의 얼굴에서 로즈의 환영이 더욱 생생하게 나타난 것이다. 그러나 메리로부터 정신적인 힘을 얻기 시작하면서부터 프랭크는 자신의 일에 더욱 헌신적으로 메달리게 되고, 그 결과 프랭크의 주변을 맴돌던 로즈의 환영도 차츰 사라지기 시작하는데...비상 근무

어둑어둑한 새벽, 파키스탄 이민자 아마드는 커피와 베이글을 팔기 위해 카트를 끈다. 한때는 히트 앨범을 낸 가수였지만, 아내는 죽고 없으며 아들에게 장난감 하나 마음대로 사주지 못하는 처지다. 우연히 알게 된 스페인 출신의 노에미와 성공한 사업가 모하메드를 알게 되면서 그의 지독한 외로움도 사라지는 듯하다. 그러던 어느 날 카트가 사라지고, 아마드는 큰 혼란에 빠진다. 인종의 용광로, 미국의 대도시 뉴욕을 냉정하지만 섬세한 시선으로 그려낸 작품. 주인공 아마드는 영화의 실제 배경인 뉴욕 맨하탄에서 카트를 끌던 비전문배우로, 이방인의 슬픔과 고독한 감정을 성공적으로 표현해 냈다. A father and son on a weekend hunting trip encounter supernatural horror in the woods.

The film follows Will Fletcher, a musician, and Eve Fisher, who works in a pub where he is performing, during one night in London. After Will has saved Eve from a drunken customer at closing time, they stay up all night together, meandering through the streets of London and forging a relationship. Next morning, Eve takes him to see her Alzheimer's-suffering grandmother. The film is often compared to Richard Linklater's films "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset", as the style is very similar.
