쿠바의 관타나모 기지에서 불법 총격 사건의 범인을 알려주겠다던 산티아고 사병이 다른 두 명의 해병에게 일명 코드 레드라는 금지된 특수 기합을 받다가 죽는 사건이 발생한다. 해군은 이 사건의 변호사로 능수능란하게 사건을 합의하는 것으로 유명한 캐피 중위(톰 크루즈)를 선임하지만 겔로웨이 소령(데미 무어)이 개입함에 따라 일은 복잡해진다. 조너선 중위(키퍼 서덜랜드)가 그 혹독한 기합을 명령했음을 알아낸 캐피와 겔로웨이 소령. 이들은 사건의 배후세력을 밝히기 위하여 기지 사령관 제셉 대령(잭 니콜슨)을 만나러 간다.

1942년, 인도네시아 자바 섬의 레바크 센바타 일본군 포로수용소. 영국 육군 중령으로 포로인 존 로렌스(톰 콘티)는, 급한 일이 있다며 이른 아침에 갑자기 자신을 깨운 하라 겐고 중사(기타노 다케시)와 함께 어디론가 나간다. 나가보니 도열한 병사들 앞에는 웃통을 벗고 상처투성이로 묶여 있는 두 명의 남자가 쓰러져 있었다. 한 사람은 네덜란드군 포로 드 용이었고, 또 한 사람은 일본군의 조선인 군속 가네모토(조니 오쿠라)였다. 하라는 로렌스에게, 드 용이 바나나를 훔치다 걸려서 독방으로 갔으며, 가네모토가 몰래 드 용의 독방에 숨어들어 그를 범한 것이라고 이야기해주는데…

1901년 남아프리카. 모란트 중위와 두 명의 호주 군인이 보어인(남아프리카공화국의 네델란드계 백인) 살해 혐의로 재판에 회부되는데 이 재판 이면에는 보어 전쟁을 평화롭게 끝내고 싶은 영국군 상부의 다른 의도가 숨겨져 있다. 보어인의 공격으로 희생된 동료들의 복수를 위해 그들을 학살 했던 군인들의 증언을 통해 새로운 진실들이 드러나면서 공방은 치열해지고 희생양이 된 모란트와 그의 동료들의 유죄를 결정해놓은 재판부도 재판을 그들의 의도대로 진행시키지 못한다.

The story is set in the British province of New York during the French and Indian War, and concerns—in part—a Huron massacre (with passive French acquiescence) of between 500 to 1,500 Anglo-American troops, who had honorably surrendered at Fort William Henry, plus some women and servants; the kidnapping of two sisters, daughters of the British commander; and their rescue by the last Mohicans.

After a bomb kills their company commander in Iraq, British soldiers Treacle and Shane are ordered to round up suspects and use torture on the detainees. Back home, the press gets the story and the pair achieves instant infamy.

During World War I, Army Private Arthur James Hamp is accused of desertion during battle. The officer assigned to defend him at his court-martial, Captain Hargreaves, finds out there is more to the case than meets the eye.

Major Charles Carrington (David Niven), is arrested for taking £125 from the base safe, he also face two other charges that could finish his distinguished service career. 1813. The Swedish army is fighting in the War of the Sixth Coalition. The popular general Von Döbeln is arrested for sending the army against the French in breach of orders by the crown prince. At the court martial he is sentenced to death but is pardoned by the king and sent to prison instead. A group of conspirators are planning to set him free and make him their leader in a coup d'etat.
