거리를 떠돌던 개 ‘샤릭’이 외과의사 ‘쁘레오브라젠스키’에 의해서 부랑자의 뇌와 생식기를 이식 받음으로써 인간 ‘샤리코프’로 변형되어 가는 과정을 그린 소설을 영화화 한 작품이다. 개를 인간으로 변형 시킨다는 다소 부 자연스런 설정이 볼셰비키 혁명을 빗댄 것이라는 작가의 의도가 숨겨져 있다고 하는데 그 시대적인 배경의 의미를 충분히 이해하지 못하더라도 이야기의 과정을 통해 다른 의미들을 발견할 수 있다. 수술로 인해 개가 인간으로 변형이 되어 가고 있지만 천성적인 습성과 그리고 새로 이식된 부랑자의 습성의 혼돈, 불완전함이라는 전제하의 무례함과 뻔뻔스러움, 사회성 결여 등이 극중의 샤리코프에게 반면교사되는 관객의 입장에서 결코 자유스러울 수 없다. 우리나라에서도 ‘거장과 마르가리타’, ‘백위군’, ‘개의심장’, ‘조야의 아파트’ 등 몇 작품이 소개된 불가코프는 1930년 대 극작가이자 소설가다. 1917년 볼셰비키 혁명이후 러시아는 백위군과 적위군 사이의 내전에 시달렸는데 키예프의 중류층태생의사였던 불가코프도 백위군에 가담해 싸운 전력이 있다. 불가코프는 반동세력으로 간주되었고 그의 작품들 역시 당 이념에 맞지 않는다는 이유로 무수히 검열에 걸려 좌절하곤 했다. 실제로 그의 작품들 태반이 소비에트 시절에는 출판금지 대상이었고 대표작으로 손꼽히는 걸작 ‘거장과 마르가리타’ 역시 불가코프 사후 30여년이 지나서야 빛을 볼 수 있었다. 이율배반적이었던 스탈린은 남몰래 ‘반동 작가’ 불가코프의 재능을 아꼈다. 그래서 불가코프는 ‘조야의 아파트’나 ‘위선자의 밀교’ 등 다분히 체제 고발적이고 풍자적인 희곡을 무대에 올릴 수 있었지만 쏟아지는 비난 탓에 공연은 곧 막을 내려야 했다.

세 명의 시골 아가씨가 청춘의 꿈을 걸고 모스크바에 상경하여 도시생활에 익숙해지려는 그녀들의 하루하루는 자본주의의 여성과 다를 것이 없다. 여주인공 카테리나는 전문학교의 자격시험에 실패, 내년엔 합격하려고 노력하는 모범적 여공이다. 대학교수인 큰 아버지가 바캉스간 사이 큰 집을 지키게 된 그녀는 단짝인 류드미라와 안토니라 두사람과 함께 상류사회의 아가씨들을 행사하며 파티를 연다. 이 날 카테리나는 TV 카메라 맨 루돌프를 만나 사랑에 빠져 육체 교섭을 갖고, 대학 교수의 딸로 알고 결혼을 약속한 남자는 어느 날 우수한 여공을 취재하러 공장을 찾다가 그 우수한 여공은 다름 아닌 카테리나임을 알고는 실망하고 그의 어머니가 나타나 자기 아들은 엘리트 딸과 결혼해야한다고 큰 소리친다. 카테리나는 이때 임신하고 있었지만 그 남자와는 깨끗이 헤어진다. 그로부터 18년이 지나 미혼모는 공장장으로 승진한다. 그녀는 처자있는 남자와 정당히 바람도 피우나 옛날 자기를 버린 여자의 출세을 알고 다시 접근하여는 치사한 남자의 속셈을 알고 그녀는 단호히 고개를 돌린다. 그녀는 다시 기차칸에서 사귄 중년 숙년 기계공 고샤를 만나 그의 기묘한 매력에 사로잡혀 사랑에 빠지는데, 루돌프가 나타나 그녀의 높은 신분을 알게 된 고샤는 그만 그녀의 곁을 떠난다. 하지만 옛 친구의 남편에게 이끌려 돌아온 고샤와 카테리나는 감격적인 화해를 이룬다.

A Soviet cult cartoon, so untypical for a Western viewer, especially, a little one. A boy named Malysh ("A Little One") suffers from solitude being the youngest of the three children in a Swedish family. The acute sense of solitude makes him desperately want a dog, but before he gets one, he "invents" a friend - the very Karlson who lives upon the roof. So typical for the Russian culture spirit of mischief, which is, actually, never punished, and the notion that relative welfare not necessarily means happiness made the book by Astrid Lindgren and its TV adaptations tremendously popular in the Soviet Union and nowadays Russia and vice versa - somewhat alienated to the Western reader and viewer (see User's comments below). However, both the book and the cartoon are truly universal - entertaining and funny for the children and thought-provoking and somewhat sad for grownups.
