King George VI: The Accidental King (2020)

끝나지 않는 전쟁으로 역사상 가장 어두웠던 시간으로 불리던 1940년, 독일이 프랑스 등 유럽국가를 차례로 침공하면서 영국 정부는 큰 혼란에 빠진다. 영국군 역시 큰 피해를 입었을 뿐 아니라 본토까지 공격받을 위험에 처했기 때문이다. 이 국가적 위기에 윈스턴 처칠(게리 올드먼)이 극적으로 총리에 임명된다. 국왕(벤 멘덜슨)을 포함해 총리로서의 자질을 의심하는 사람들에게 둘러싸인 처칠은 어려움 속에서도 독일과의 전면전을 다짐한다. 그러나 전황은 갈수록 나빠지고, 급기야 다른 정치인들은 독일과의 굴욕적인 평화 협정을 제안한다.

1945년 5월 7~8일, 유럽 내에서 2차 세계 대전이 막을 내렸다. 이날 런던에서는 군인들과 시민들이 함께 어울린 축제의 밤이 펼쳐졌고, 엘리자베스와 마거릿 공주 또한 그 축제에 참여한다. 두 공주는 보호자인 군인들과 함께 다니고, 통금인 새벽 1시 이전까지 돌아와야 한다는 조건으로 생애 첫 밤 외출을 하게 되는데 은 바로 그 밤 외출을 소재로 한 로맨틱 코미디 신분을 감추고 거리로 나선 두 자매는 어느 순간 떨어져 다닌다. 마거릿 공주는 자신을 평범한 소녀라고 생각하고 접근한 한 해군 병사와 어울려 나이트클럽, 도박장, 술집과 집창촌까지 공주가 갈 것이라 상상하지 못한 곳에 간다. 한편 엘리자베스는 무단 외출을 감행한 공군 병사와 마거릿을 찾기 위한 모험을 펼친다. 영화는 두 자매가 6년 동안 감내해야 했던 공포를 벗어나 자신의 신분에 따른 제약도 잊은 채 생애 가장 잊지 못할 밤을 보내는 모습을 밝고 경쾌하게 그린다. 하지만 역시나 영화와 현실이 다른 부분은 있는데 1945년 5월 당시 두 공주는 각각 만 19세와 14세였으며 보호자들과 함께 새벽 1시에 무사히 귀가했다고 한다.

However Edward decides to put his love for a divorced American, Wallis Simpson, above dynastic duty, and ends up abdicating the throne, which now falls to Bertie, who reigns as George VI.

This feature documentary offers a complete record of the 1939 Royal Tour of Canada by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The film opens as the royal couple makes a stop in Québec city, where Premier Duplessis greets them. They then visit Montréal and meet mayor Camilien Houde. A visit to Ottawa brings them to Parliament, where Prime Minister MacKenzie King is present. The visit continues throughout Ontario, the prairies, and western Canada. The Royal couple also makes a brief stop in Washington and meets President Franklin Roosevelt. They then stop in on the Maritime provinces before boarding a Royal yacht for the journey back to England.
