'존경하는 어머니'는 대여배우 조안 크로포드의 삶을 다루고 있습니다. 제목은 반어적 표현입니다. 이 영화 자체가 조안 크로포드의 입양된 딸인 크리스타나의 자전적 소설을 기초로 하여 만들었고, 크리스티나는 조안 크로포드가 1977년에 사망하자 곧바로 자기 어머니에 대한 폭로성 책을 발표했고, 그 원작을 토대로 1981년에 만들어진 영화입니다. 조안 크로포드가 두 번의 이혼 후 크리스티나를 입양하여 키운 1940년대 부터 사망에 이르기까지의 삶을 다루고 있습니다.
