10년간 지방 소도시의 대학에서 고고학 교수 생활을 하던 중에 돌연 사직서를 제출하고 이사를 가려는 존 올드맨 교수(데이빗 리 스미스)는 그의 행동에 의심을 품고 집요하게 추궁하는 동료와 친구들이 마련한 환송회에서 갑자기 폭탄선언을 한다. 그건 다름 아닌 자신이 14,000년 전부터 살아온 사람이라는 것. 그는 매번 10년마다 자신이 늙지 않는다는 것을 알아채기 전에 다른 신분으로 바꿔 이주해왔고, 지금의 이 곳에서도 10년을 채웠기 때문에 서둘러 다른 곳으로 이동을 할 수 밖에 없으며, 그 동안 역사 속 여러 인물들과 세계를 뒤흔들었던 사건에 관여했다고 주장한다.

미국의 거대한 광산회사 겸 극지개발회사의 북극기지 연구소에서 일하는 의학, 고고인류학, 생물학, 생화학 연구진들은 어느날 빙하속에서 약 2만년전 인간으로 추정되는 원시인의 냉동된 시신을 발견한다. 연구기지로 그 얼음덩이를 가져다 녹인 연구진들은 인공혈액을 주입시키고 갖가지 약품과 의학적인 방법을 사용해서 그를 살려내는데 성공한다. 젊은 고고인류학자인 세피드 박사는 연구팀들이 그를 생체 해부, 미국 각지의 의과대학에 몸의 각부분을 보내서 연구시키기 전에 완전한 인간으로써 연구할 기간을 달라고 애원, 2주일의 기간을 얻어 낸다. 찰리란 이름을 붙인 이 원시인은 원시환경에서 혼자 쓸쓸히 옛 삶의 방식을 재현해 보다가 세피드와 친구가 되고, 알 수 없는 음향과 언어로 대화를 하려한다. 본국에서 달려온 언어학자가 사라진 언어가 오랜 에스키모의 조상의 말과 비슷한 음성학적 구조를 갖고 있다고 말한다.
