가난한 집안에서 태어난 그리그(Edvard Grieg: 토랄브 모스타드 분)는 그의 재능을 알아주지 않는 음악계의 편견으로 힘든 생활을 하고 있었다. 그러나 스웨덴의 여인 테레사(Therese Berg: 크리스티나 스콜린 분)는 물심양면으로 그리그를 도와주려고 노력한다. 그녀의 마음을 알게 된 테레사의 아버지는 그리그를 만나지 않는다는 조건으로 그리그의 연주회 비용을 지원해주기로 한다. 결국 아버지의 강요로 핸슨 대위(Captain Hansen: 칼 리그 분)와의 약혼을 하기로 한 테레사는 대위의 별장으로 떠나게 된다. 테레사의 도움으로 덴마크의 코펜하겐에서 연주회를 연 그리그는 생각만큼 큰 호응은 얻지 못했지만 노르웨이의 국가를 작곡한 리카도 노드랙(Richard Nordraak: 프랭크 포레타 분)과 그의 음악을 노래로 불러준 니나 하그로프(Nina Grieg: 플로렌스 헨더슨 분)를 만나면서 새로운 인생의 계기를 가진다. 세 사람의 우정은 깊어만 갔고, 니나와 그리그는 결혼을 하기에 이른다. 하지만 약속했던 지휘자 후임이 그에게 오지 않게 되자 결혼 생활은 힘들어 지고 결국 피아노 레슨으로 생계를 유지한다. 그러던 어느 날, 우연히 신문에서 레슨 광고를 본 테레사는 그리그에게 편지를 써서 아버지가 돌아가셨으며, 핸슨 대위와의 약혼은 취소됐고 그녀가 받은 유산으로 그의 연주회를 돕겠다고 하는데...
Based on a play by Phoebe and Henry Ephron, "3 Is a Family" is a 1940s farce. Charlie Ruggles plays a hubby whose bungled business schemes force his wife, Fay Bainter, to enter the workplace. The couple's daughter, Marjorie Reynolds, shows up with her twin babies in tow. Son Arthur Lake arrives with his pregnant wife (Jeff Donnell). And overbearing maiden aunt Helen Broderick also decides to move in. Because his wife is away at work, poor old Charlie Ruggles is not only housekeeper, but nursemaid and servant as well.
