1925년 영국 런던. 화려한 사교모임과 댄스파티를 즐기는 도도한 아가씨 키티와 그녀를 파티에서 보고 첫눈에 반해버린 차갑고 냉철한 성격의 월터. 월터는 키티에게 청혼을 하고 키티는 자신을 숨막히게 하는 엄마의 그늘에서 벗어나고자 그의 청혼을 받아들인다. 세균학자인 월터의 연구 일정으로 인해 결혼 후 중국 상해로 넘어간 그들. 그러나 너무나 다른 성격과 다른 취향을 가진 두 사람의 결혼생활이 행복할 리 만무하다. 활발한 성격의 키티와 매사 너무나 진지하고 조용히 연구와 독서를 즐기는 월터의 사이는 점점 소원해지고 키티는 사교모임에서 만난 외교관과 사랑에 빠진다. 아내의 불륜을 눈치챈 월터는 콜레라가 퍼져있는 오지 산골마을에 자원해서 가고 그곳에 키티를 데려간다. 마치 자신의 믿음과 사랑의 배신에 대한 댓가를 치르게 하려는 듯. 문명의 혜택을 전혀 받지 못하고 콜레라로 인해 마을 사람의 태반이 죽어나가는 그곳에서 월터는 키티의 존재를 무시한 채 연구와 의료봉사에 전념하고 키티는 수감생활과 같은 나날을 보낸다. 무지로 인해 처음에 월터를 배척하던 마을 사람들은 그의 진심 어린 도움과 노력에 차츰 마음을 열고, 남을 위한 일이라고는 한번도 해본 적 없던 키티도 수녀원에서 아이들을 돌보며 봉사활동을 시작한다. 그리고 두 사람의 마음은 차츰 서로를 향해 열리고 키티와 월터는 진정으로 서로를 사랑하게 되지만 이내 슬픈 운명이 그들의 행복을 가로 막는데...

수녀원에서 생활하던 비리디아나는 수녀가 되기 전 마지막으로 후원자인 아저씨를 방문한다. 후원자는 비리디아나가 신혼 첫날 밤 안타깝게 죽은 아내를 빼닮은 것에 마음이 흔들려 그녀를 잠재워 겁탈을 시도한다. <최후의 만찬>을 패러디한 장면으로 유명한 루이스 부뉴엘의 설명이 필요없는 걸작.

라스베가스 최고의 인기 가수가 된 들로리스에게 어느 날 수녀님들이 찾아와 도움을 청한다. 자신들이 선생으로 있는 학교의 아이들에게 음악을 가르쳐 달라는 것. 옛 정 때문에 할 수 없이 다시 수녀복을 입게 된 들로리스는 초반부터 못 말리는 문제아들에게 골탕을 먹고 두 손을 들고 만다. 그러나 우연히 학교의 이사가 학교를 폐쇄하려고 한다는 사실을 알게 된 들로리스는 다른 수녀님들과 힘을 합해 학교를 살리기로 마음먹고 특유의 끼를 발동한다. 아이들이 모두 음악에 소질이 있다는 걸 발견한 들로리스는 합창단을 만드는데, 처음에는 적대적이었던 학생들도 자신들의 숨은 재능을 발견해내고 희망을 갖게해 준 들로리스에게 마음을 열기 시작한다. 들로리스와 수녀님들은 합창대회에 참가해서 좋은 성적을 거두면 아이들에게도 자신감이 생기고 학교를 살리는데도 도움이 될 거라는 생각에 대회 참가를 추진하는데, 막상 대회가 열리는 날 들로리스가 클럽 가수라는 걸 알게 된 이사장과 교장은 합창단의 참가를 저지하러 출동한다. 한편 학생들은 다른 팀의 공연을 본 후 지레 겁을 먹고 포기하려하고, 들로리스는 아이들에게 용기를 불어넣어준다. 결국 아이들은 멋진 공연을 펼쳐 우승하고 학교의 폐교결정도 취소된다. 피날레를 장식하는 화려한 공연, "오 해피데이"와 찬송가 "기뻐하며 경배하세"를 비롯해 여러 귀에 익은 곡들이 어깨를 들썩이게 한다.

가브리엘(오드리 헵번 분)은 벨기에의 유명한 의사의 딸. 사랑하는 청년의 어머니가 정신병자이기 때문에 결혼하지 못한 것을 비관해 평소 동경해 온 수녀 생활을 하게 된다. 물론 부모들은 그에 대해 반대했다. 그녀는 모범적인 수녀로 벨기에령 콩고의 간호 수녀가 되어 열대 지방으로 떠난다. 그러나 과로 때문에 폐결핵에 걸려 현지 의사의 도움으로 치료하지만 결국, 잉글버트 송환문제로 본국으로 송환된다. 제2차 대전이 발발하고 전선에 나간 부친이 전사하자, 그녀는 수녀 생활을 청산하고 종군 간호원이 된다.
