베를린영화제 은곰상을 수상한 <로열 어페어>(2012) 이후 십여 년 만에 니콜라이 아르셀 감독과 매즈 미켈슨이 의기투합해 또 하나의 대서사극을 완성했다. 18세기 중반, 루드빅 칼렌 대위는 덴마크 국왕의 숙원사업인 황무지 개간에 앞장서겠다는 포부를 밝힌다. 궁정의 귀족들은 그를 천출이라 폄하하고, 이웃한 영지를 다스리는 지주는 그를 쫓아내기 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않으며, 이주한 농민들은 그가 딸처럼 키우는 검은 피부의 소녀를 경계한다. 신의 시험과 고난을 끝없이 겪어야 했던 욥처럼, 칼렌 대위의 삶은 황무지가 선사하는 혼란과 고통으로 점철되어 있다. 그는 메마른 대지를 멋지게 정복하는 웨스턴 히어로가 아니다. 왕이 하사한 땅에 ‘왕의 집’을 세우고 감자 한 그루를 싹 틔우려는 욕심과 그 과정에서 희생되는 이들을 향한 윤리적 책임감 사이에서 고뇌하는 인물일 뿐이다. 이처럼 선악의 경계에서 갈등하는 주인공을 표현하는 데 매즈 미켈슨 같은 적임자가 또 있을까? 실존 인물의 실화에 기반하고 있으나, 감독이 재창조한 것으로 보이는 여성 캐릭터들의 존재가 주인공의 선택과 행동에 미치는 영향은 결코 가볍지 않다.

두 사기꾼 모험가 피치 카라한(Peachy Carnehan: 마이클 케인 분)과 다니엘 드래보트(Daniel Dravot: 숀 코넬리 분)는 인도에 주둔했던 영국 군인으로, 절도, 총기밀수, 협박 등 건달짓을 일삼다 인도에서 추방된 뒤 아프가니스탄 동부의 산악지대 카프리스탄 외지로 떠나 통치자 행세를 하기로 결심한다. 가혹한 기후를 이겨내며 힘들게 산을 넘은 두 사람은 아름다운 골짜기에 도착하고, 거기서 만난 빌리 피쉬와 함께 사제들의 보물을 훔쳐내려는 음모를 꾸민다. 그들 일행은 배교자들의 도시 시칸더굴을 습격하고, 그 와중에 다니엘이 가슴에 화살을 맞게 되지만 펜던트 덕분에 목숨을 건지게 된다. 이를 본 원주민들은 화살에 맞고도 죽지 않은 다니엘을 신이라고 믿게 되고, 알렉산더 대왕의 화신이 된 듯 한 다니엘은 그들에게 재산을 바칠 것을 요구한다. 다니엘은 점차 자기 기만적인 오만에 빠져들고 보물을 갖고 떠나기보다는 자신이 진짜 신이라고 믿기 시작한다. 원주민 여인과의 결혼까지 강행하는 다니엘. 그러나 신과 결혼한다는 두려움에 떨던 원주민 여인, 록산느는 다니엘의 얼굴을 물어뜯고, 다니엘의 얼굴에서 흐르는 피를 보고 그가 신이 아님을 알아챈 원주민들은 두 사람을 공격하기 시작하는데....

Karin is restricted to a castle in Finland. In the prison Erik believes that he is still the king and gives the guards presents such as all fishes in the Baltic Sea.

François Villon, in his lifetime the most renowned poet in France, is also a prankster, an occasional criminal, and an ardent patriot.

King Louis XI masquerades as a commoner in Paris, seeking out the treachery he is sure lurks in his kingdom. At a local tavern, he overhears the brash poet François Villon extolling why he would be a better king. Annoyed yet intrigued, the King bestows on Villon the title of Grand Constable. Soon Villon begins work and falls for a lovely lady-in-waiting, but then must flee execution when the King turns on him.

On Christmas Eve, the Little King sneaks two tramps into the castle. The next morning, the three men are thrilled by the presents Santa left behind.
