해체 위기에 몰린 타다노 남자 고등학교 수영부의 부원은 수영대회에 출전한 여덟 명 중 8등을 하는 3학년 스즈키 단 한 명뿐이다. 그러던 어느 날 미모의 여교사 사쿠마 선생이 수영부를 맡게되고, 수영부에는 단번에 서른 명의 지원자가 몰려든다. 그러나 그녀의 전공은 수영이 아닌 '수중발레.' 남학교에서도 수중발레가 가능할거라 믿는 사쿠마 선생의 의욕적인 설명에도 불구하고 대부분의 학생들은 기겁하며 도망치고, 스즈키를 포함한 5명만이 얼떨결에 수영부에 남게 된다. 수영실력은 변변치 않지만 수중발레의 매력에 반해버린 스즈키, 농구부에서 왕따 당해 수영부로 들어온 사토, 깡마른 몸을 근육질로 만드는 게 꿈인 오타, 맥주병에 공부벌레인 가나자와, 여자 같은 사오토메. 이들 다섯 명이 모인 수중발레 팀 '워터보이즈'는 학교와 친구들의 놀림 속에서 그들도 무언가 할 수 있다는 걸 보여주기 위해 어려운 결정을 하는데...

Inspired by classical Esther Williams techniques from the 1950s, this group of train drivers and meat buyers, archivists and teachers soon became passionate exponents of the sport.
