현대 과학이 집결된 최첨단의 도시 맨하탄. 이 화려한 도시의 한쪽에는 한때는 누군가의 상상이었으며, 이제는 사람들의 손가락질을 받는 어느덧 환상 속의 신화가 되어버린 위대한 마법사 ‘발타자 블레이크(니콜라스 케이지 분)’가 살고 있다. 물론 그의 본업은 사악한 어둠의 마법사 ‘맥심 호르바스(알프레드 몰리나 분)’로부터 도시를 지키는 것. 전세계 어둠의 세력을 모으는 맥심을 물리치기 위해 발타자 역시 평범해 보이지만 엄청난 마법의 잠재력을 지닌 데이브(제이 바루첼 분)를 과감히 제자로 거둔다. 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 인류의 운명을 책임지는 임무를 맡게 된 데이브. 그러나 목숨이 왔다갔다하는 마법 훈련만으로도 모자랐는지 스승인 발타자는 사상 최악 어둠의 마법사 맥심과 지상 최대의 마법 전쟁을 시작한다. 다소 엉뚱하지만 분명 위대한 마법사 발타자와 더 없이 사악한 어둠의 마법사 맥심. 그들의 불꽃튀는 대결 속에서 마법사의 제자로 다시 태어난 데이브는 도시와 인류를 구원할 수 있을 것인가? 아니! 도시와 인류보다 자신의 목숨을 구할 수 있을 것인가?!

“마이클 잭슨과 다이애나 로스, 퀸시 존스가 재해석한 『오즈의 마법사』 뮤지컬 버전.” 평범한 가정에서 자라왔고 지금은 독립을 꿈꾸는 스물네 살의 도로시. 그런데 어느 날 그녀에게 상상도 못한 일이 벌어진다. 눈보라가 몰아치던 밤, 도로시는 강아지 토토를 찾으러 나갔다가 거대한 회오리 바람에 휘말려 어디론가 날아간다. 그리고 비현실적인 장소에서 정신을 차린 도로시는 충격적인 광경과 마주한다. 도로시가 부딪혀 떨어트린 조명 구조물에 누군가 깔려 죽고 만 것이다. 동화 『오즈의 마법사』를 과감하게 각색한 뮤지컬 영화. 거장 시드니 루멧이 연출하고 퀸시 존스가 음악감독을 맡아 원작의 동화적 풍경을 빌딩숲, 지하철, 공장 등 대도시의 인공적이고 삭막한 풍경으로 바꾸어놓았다. 또한 허수아비로 분장한 스무 살의 마이클 잭슨이 춤을 추고 노래를 하는 모습을 볼 수 있는 것 역시 에서 놓칠 수 없는 부분. 영국의 저명한 극작가 테렌스 래티건의 희곡 'The Sleeping Prince'를 마릴린 몬로가 직접 각색한 것이다. 영국에서 촬영되었으며, 올리비에와 몬로의 프로덕션이 합작으로 제작했다. 올리비에 - 몬로 사이의 연기 조화가 예상 외로 좋았고, 조연진들이 아주 좋은 호흡을 맞추어주었다. 오랜 무대 역사를 가진 영국의 탄탄한 연기진들의 실력을 볼 수가 있다. 1911년 영국왕 죠지 5세의 대관식에 참석하기 위해서 온 어느 나라의 왕자와 우연히 대사관에 들른 미국인 쇼걸 아가씨와의 사이에서 벌어지는 해프닝과 은근한 로맨스가 펼쳐진다. 상류 사회의 위선을 풍자하고 인간성의 진실은 신분과는 관계가 없다는 메시지를 담고 있어서 그런대로 의미가 있는 작품이기는 하나, 지나치게 이야기를 끄는 듯한 느낌이 주는 영화이다. 비평가들의 평가는 그런대로 좋았으나 흥행에서는 실패했다.

The misuse of science has created weapons out of the crystals that can fire a heat ray to destroy whatever it touches.

Paul, a computer whiz who spends more time with his machine than with his girlfriend, finds that he has been chosen as a worthy opponent for Mestema, an evil wizard who has spent centuries searching for a challenging foe. After having his computer changed into a wristband weapon, Paul does battle with a variety of monsters before finally coming face to face with the ultimate adversary.

학교 불량배들에게 항상 당하던 주인공이 우연히 학교 불량배들에게 쫓기다 학교 도서관에 들어가게 된다. 도서관에 들어간 주인공은 우연히 '네버엔딩 스토리'라는 책을 읽게되면서 이야기가 전개된다. 주인공은 책에 주문을 외우면서 판타지 세계에 들어가게 된다. 판타지 세계에서 주인공은 난쟁이 부부와 나무 인형, 돌 인형, 용 인형을 만나게 되는데 거기에서 주인공은 책을 도서관에 두고 왔다는 사실을 알게 된다. 불량배들은 그 책을 읽어가며 나쁜일들 모의하게된다. 그러면서 판타지 세계에도 점점 악의 무리가 몰려 들어오게된다. 악의무리를 퇴치하기 위해 다시 현실의 세계로 돌아오게 된다. 주인공이 가져온 목걸이를 주인공 여동생이 훔치면서 목걸이의 마력을 잃게 되는데...
