12월 크리스마스 즈음, 성실한 의사인 루이스 샬러(더그레이 스콧)는 아들 맥스와 함께 기차를 탔다가 아름다운 여인 사라(카라 토인턴)에게 첫눈에 반한다. 하지만 달콤한 순간도 잠시, 루이스는 승무원이 사라진 것과 브레이크가 고장 났다는 사실을 알게 된다. 그는 남아있던 승객들(일레인, 피터, 얀)과 함께 기차를 멈추고 죽음을 피하려 안간힘을 쓴다. 기차의 속도는 점점 빨라지고 철도 건널목에 맞닥뜨리게 되면서 피터가 경찰에 도움을 요청하지만, 루이스는 디젤 기차를 기차 밖에서 멈추기란 불가능하다는 것을 깨닫는다. 기차를 멈출 방법을 찾던 끝에 객차를 연결하는 장치를 찾아내고, 장치의 연결고리를 끊어내던 중 피터는 목숨을 잃지만 루이스가 결국 기차를 멈추는데 성공한다.
