Hotel E (1992)

전직 배우이자 작가인 ‘아이딘’은 터키 카파도키아에서 호텔 ‘오셀로’를 운영한다. 남부럽지 않은 부를 누리고 있는 그는 양심과 도덕을 운운하며 자신이 얼마나 공정하고 자비로운 사람인지 알아주길 바란다. 하지만 여동생 ‘네즐라’는 번번히 그를 신랄하게 비판하며 독설을 던지고, 젊고 아름다운 아내 ‘니할’은 그의 위선적인 모습을 경멸하며 권태를 느낀다. 서로에게 상처와 불신만을 안기는 세 사람은 가난한 세입자의 아들의 충격적인 행동으로 인해 걷잡을 수 없이 무너지기 시작하고... 어느 날 아침, ‘아이딘’은 불현듯 찾아온 낯선 자신과 마주하게 된다.

The director's natural curiosity enables him to separate uncommon individuals (mostly women) from their otherwise common surroundings: a trio of owner/managers in Santa Fe; the wives and girlfriends of men behind bars in Florence, Arizona (including one touching May/December romance); and (best of all) the eccentric dancer who, single-handedly, revived the old Amargosa Opera House in the semi-ghost town of Death Valley Junction, California. The film is a reminder that everyone has a story to tell, and those related here are too unusual to be anything but the truth.

Shanghai, China. The last expatriate Westerners still living in the city are imprisoned in a hotel by the communist authorities in order to find the spy hiding among them.

In 1747, a handsome but rebellious Scotsman named Richard Abdee is auctioned off as a slave on a Caribbean island controlled by French and British sugar-planters. When caught having sex with his owner's wife, Abdee is given 100 lashes with the dreaded "dragonard" whip. This sentence is meant to be fatal but Abdee survives and later joins in a slave revolt which puts an end to the island's era of savage whippings.

Noi runs a rural bar and guesthouse called the Paradise Hotel. He tends bar and arm wrestles any challengers. The hotel, which has only one room, already has a guest, a man named Chana. Chana is annoyed that the hotel plays host to various musical groups, including a man who sings European opera, another man who practices the trombone, a Peking opera troupe, a Filipina ballad singer and a brass band that accompanies two bare-knuckles boxers.

When the friend of a hotel boy, who is planning to marry a young tenant, arrives at the same time with a couple of newlyweds, Ms. Byzantiou is inspired to write about a dramatic love affair.
