생물학 교수 에쓰리지 박사의 원숭이 뇌세포 재생 실험에 쓰던 원숭이가 이상 현상이 생긴다. 학교 학보사 기자인 샘과 더피는 캠퍼스내의 뉴스 거리를 찾다가 애쓰리지 박사의 실험을 탐지하고 이를 동물 학대의 차원에서 보도하기로 작정한다. 어느날 저녁 더피는 샘의 사진기를 빌려 에쓰리지 박사의 실험실로 잠입해 들어가 사진을 찍다 원숭이에게 물리게 되고 원숭이는 불가사이한 힘을 발휘하여 도망가다 차에 치어 죽게 된다. 그후부터 더피의 상처는 썩어들어가고 알 수 없는 이상한 힘의 지배를 받아 성격이 점차로 포악해지기 시작한다. 그러다 본인의 인성으로 자제하기에 힘이 든 더피는 살인을 저질르고 다니고 급기야는 샘에게 죽여달라고 부탁, 결국 샘은 더피를 사살해 버린다. 하지만 이전에 더피의 여자 친구 데비에게도 전염이 되어 그녀를 겁탈하려는 세 명의 불량 학생까지 4명이나 더 이 병에 감염된다. 이들은 학교 할로윈 축제에 잠입하여 살인 행각을 벌이고 결국 샘이 모두 처치하여 사태를 해결한다. 이때 기숙사를 떠나는 샘의 여자 친구 로렌에게 달려드는 에쓰리지 박사를 샘이 건물 밖으로 떨어뜨리는데...
