평화롭고 화목한 가정의 아버지와 맏딸, 막내 아들이 호주의 아웃백으로 여행을 떠난다. 내륙 사막의 한 가운데 차를 세운 후 딸은 차에서 조금 떨어진 곳에 보자기를 깔고 간소하지만 정성이 담긴 점심 식사를 차리기 시작한다. 점심 준비가 끝나갈 때쯤, 우울증이나 정신분열증을 앓고 있는 듯한 아버지가 천진하게 소풍을 즐기고 있는 자신의 두 자녀에게 무자비하고 광기 어린 총알을 퍼붓기 시작한다. 영민하고 민첩한 딸은 이 처참하고 난해한 상황에도 당황하지 않고 어린 남동생과 함께 근처에 있는 바위 뒤로 몸을 숨긴다. 도시와 문명으로부터 멀리 떨어진 외진 사막에서 벌어지는 이 부조리한 비극은 결국 자녀들을 죽이지 못한 아버지의 자살로 끝난다. 사막에서 벗어날 수 있는 유일한 방법인 자동차는 아버지가 자녀들이 달아나지 못하도록 기름을 끼얹고 불을 질러 이미 화염에 휩싸여 있다. 막 사춘기를 넘은 어린 소녀와 아버지의 행동을 전혀 이해하지 못하고 자동차 놀이에 여념이 없는 꼬마는 이제부터 펼쳐질 드넓은 아웃백에서의 생존 게임을 이겨내야만 한다.

When Benjamin Steed and Mary Ann Steed relocate their family to upstate New York in the early 1800's, they unwittingly settle in a town divided along religious lines. After their new hired help turns out to be at the center of the uproar, each member of the Steed family must come to terms with their own beliefs in the face of heavy persecution. Together they struggle to weather the raging controversy surrounding a young man named Joseph Smith.

In the later years of the nineteenth century Latin master Mr. Chipping is the mainstay of Brookfields boys boarding school, a good teacher and a kindly person but he is considered to be married to the job so that it is a surprise when, on a walking holiday, he meets and marries the vivacious Kathie,who becomes his helpmate at the school but sadly pre-deceases him. Just before World War One insensitive new headmaster Ralston tries to edge Chipping out but the boys rally and Sir John Rivers, an old pupil of Chipping's and now head of the board of governors, invites him to stay and,when the war breaks out and Ralston joins up, Chipping becomes the new head.

L.P. 하트리의 '중개인'이 원작이다. 인간 차별을 극도로 혐오하는 것을 작품에 꾸준히 잡아온 감독은 전통과 계급을 중시하는 영국 사회의 답답함을 두 계급간의 갈등으로서, 매우 객관적이고 서정적으로 보여준다. 깊은 동굴처럼 찍어낸 귀족의 대저택의 어두운 회랑, 그리고 위에서 내려다본 교회의 부감 쇼트들은 암울한 분위기를 전달하는 반면, 농부 테드가 등장하는 전원 풍경은 밝고 화사한 야외 장면으로서, 극도의 대비로 계급간의 모습을 보여준다. 대담한 여성역을 맡은 줄리 크리스티는 의 라라역으로 알려진 영국 배우로, 연기력도 좋아 오스카상도 받았다. 상대 농부역의 알란 베이츠는 터프하고 야성적인 남자역을 잘 맡았다.

Young seminary student Franziskus (Benjamin Besson) has been ceremonially ordained. He wants to escape the harshness and injustice of the world and devote himself to the service of God in the quiet seclusion of a monastery. He is also hoping to forget the beautiful lady Aurelie (Jaroslava Schallerová), whose life he saved in a flooded brook and with whom he spent an amorous night. He knows that her father would never allow her to marry him. But the devil dressed in a monk's habit and under the name Viktorin (Andrzej Kopiczynski) intervenes in Franziskus's destiny and attempts to lead him astray. To do so he first uses the diabolical elixirs kept at the monastery as a rare relic. When the young monk gets expelled from the monastery, Viktorin prepares another trap with the help of Aurelie's stepmother Euphemie (Milena Dvorská).

Poised to attend Oxford University, 19-year-old Charles Highway decides it's high time to have a romantic encounter with an older woman. With the help of a computer program and several eccentric relatives, Highway sets his sights on seducing Rachel Noyce, a stunning American in her 20s. However, Highway has his work cut out for him. 나치 점령기의 프랑스 북부의 어느 마을에 사는 마리는 독일에 포로로 잡혀간 남편 폴을 기다리며 두 아이의 어머니로서 근근이 생계를 꾸려간다. 마을에는 군인으로 징집되거나 포로로 잡혀간 남편 대신 독일 점령군과 정을 통하며 외로움을 달랜 여성들의 원치 않는 임신이 늘어난다. 마리는 우연한 기회에 이웃 여인 지네트의 낙태를 도와주고 그 보답으로 축음기를 받은 것을 계기로 불법 낙태 시술을 본격적인 돈벌이 수단으로 이용하기 시작한다. 뿐만 아니라 매춘부 뤼시에게 자기 집의 방 한 칸을 빌려주고 손님을 맞이하게도 한다. 그러는 가운데 뤼시의 고객으로 알게 된 청년 뤼시앙의 구애에 넘어가 불륜까지 저지른다. 한편 그 사이 수용소에서 풀려나 집으로 돌아온 남편 폴에게 마리는 이미 아무런 애정도 없는 상태이다. 폴은 아내의 행동에서 수상한 낌새를 채고는 아들에게 아내의 일상을 캐물어 어렴풋이나마 사태를 파악하지만 실업자 신세인 그의 처지로서는 집안에서 목소리를 높이기도 어려울뿐더러 아내를 압박할 명분도 미흡하다. 그러나 얼마 후 뤼시앙과 아내가 함께 있는 모습을 목격한 후 복수를 결심하고, 아내의 행각을 고발하는 편지를 경시청에 보낸다. 이런 사실도 모른 채 오랜 꿈인 가수가 되기 위해 가창 레슨을 받으러 다니던 마리는 경찰에 체포된다. 파리 최고재판소로 이송된 마리는 반국가적인 범죄를 저질렀다는 이유로 사형선고를 받고 단두대에서 처형된다.

18세의 어여쁜 추알(공리 분)은 가난한 죄로 나귀 한마리와 맞바뀌어 50이 넘도록 독신으로 있는 양조장 주인인 리서방에게 팔려간다. 사랑도 모르고, 남편의 얼굴은 더더구나 모르는 채 가마를 타고 신랑집으로 향한다. 흔들거리는 가마 문틈으로 보이는 츄알의 가죽신에 가마를 맨 유이찬아오는 눈을 뗄 줄 모른다. 가차없이 내리쬐는 햇볕으로 가마꾼들의 벗은 상체가 번들거린다. 유이찬아오의 우람한 몸을 보면서 추알은 야릇한 흥분을 느낀다. 드디어 산행길에 올라 친정으로 가던 날, 젊은이들은 붉은 수수밭에서 뜨겁게 맺어진다. 남편이 살해되는 바람에 과부가 된 추알이 혼자 힘으로 양조장을 재건한다. 친정에 가는 날 수수밭에서 그녀를 범한 유이찬아오는 그녀와 동침한 사실을 사람들에게 떠벌려 그녀를 괴롭히고 새로 빚은 고량주에 오줌을 누는 등 말썽을 피운다. 그리고 추알을 덮석 안아들고 자신이 주인이라고 안채로 들어간다. 그런데 유이찬아오가 오줌을 눈 고량주는 어느 해보다 맛있는 고량주가 돼 18리 고량주라는 이름으로 인기를 얻게 된다. 유이찬아오가 추알의 남편으로 양조장을 돌보게 된 뒤 양조장에 가장 나이많은 일꾼인 라호안이 사라진다. 그로부터 9년 후 마을의 평화는 들이닥친 일본군에 의해 깨지고 만다. 수수밭은 군영도로를 만들기 위해 베어지고 항일 게릴라로 활동하던 라호안은 산 채로 잡혀 가죽이 벗겨지는 형벌 끝에 죽고 만다. 분노한 마을 사람들은 고량주에 불을 붙여 기관포를 앞세운 일본군과 싸운다. 전투 중에 추알이 일본군의 기관총 세례 아래 쓰러진다. 뒤늦게 터진 폭탄으로 수수밭은 온통 화염에 쌓인다. 삽시간에 수수밭은 피로 물들고 대지 위에 불사조처럼 유이찬아오 부자가 우뚝 선다. 그리고 그들의 머리 위로 피덩이 같은 붉은 해가 이글거린다.
