Sympathy for the Underdog (1971)

전미학생 가라데 선수권 대회에서 우승한 다니엘(Daniel Larusso: 랄프 마치오 분)은 생활속에서 많은 변화를 겪게 된다. 사랑하던 애인은 프랑스로 유학을 가고 어머니는 연수받으러 LA로 간다. 그 때 사부 미야기(Miyagi: 팻 모리타 분)는 고향 일본 오사까로 부터 부친이 위독하다는 편지를 받게 된다. 그러자 외롭게 지내던 다니엘은 사부 미야기와 함께 일본으로 출발하는데 그곳에서 40여년간 원한의 칼날을 갈며 살아온 사또(Sato: 대니 카메코나 분) 일당이 엄청난 흉계를 꾸미고 그들을 기다리고 있었다.

가상의 가수 릴리 슈슈의 노래를 너무나 사랑하는 열네 살 소년 유이치. 그러나 그의 중학교 생활은 끔찍하기만 하다. 단짝 친구였던 반 아이들의 리더가 된 후 자신을 이지메시킨다. 한밤중에 불려나가 그들 앞에서 자위를 하거나 원조교제를 하고 있는 여학생의 일거수일투족도 감시해야 하며, 심지어 첫사랑 쿠노 역시 이지메를 당하지만 그녀를 도와주기에는 자신의 슬픔을 감당하기에도 벅차다. 그의 유일한 안식처는 오로지 영혼을 뒤흔드는 듯한 릴리 슈슈의 노래 뿐. 그러나 현실은 노래로 감출 만큼 만만하지 않다.

비폭력주의자인 도스는 전쟁으로부터 조국과 소중한 사람들을 지키기 위해 총을 들지 않아도 되는 의무병으로 육군에 자진 입대한다. 총을 들 수 없다는 이유로 필수 훈련 중 하나인 총기 훈련 마저 거부한 도스는 동료 병사들과 군 전체의 비난과 조롱을 받게 된다. 결국 군사재판까지 받게 되지만 끝까지 자신의 신념을 굽히지 않은 도스에게 군 상부는 오키나와 전투에 총기 없이 의무병으로 참전할 것을 허락하는데…

동네 야구단의 멤버이기는 하지만 긴장 때문에 좋은 성적을 거두지 못하던 마사키는 삼진아웃을 당해 팀을 지게 만든다. 경기 후 일터로 돌아온 마사키는 우연히 야쿠자와 싸움을 하게 되고, 결국 카즈오와 함께 총을 구하기 위해 오키나와로 향한다. 그곳에서 그들은 야쿠자인 우에하라와 타마키를 만나고, 총을 건네받는다. 마침내 총을 손에 넣은 마사키와 카즈오는 복수를 위해 도쿄로 돌아오는데...

인원과 보급의 부족에도 불구하고 치열한 전투 속에서 결사적 임무 수행을 하는 대장 커비는 프로펠러를 총검화하는 초저공대지 공격전술을 주장하는 전형적인 직업군인이다. 그러나 늘 부하를 사랑하기만 하는 부대장과는 의견에 차질이 있다. 대장의 전술이 상부의 인정을 받아 지상군을 도와 연속적인 승리를 거두는 동안 부대장도 대장을 닮게 된다는 이야기. 미해병항공부대의 활약상을 그린 영화로 임무와 애정 사이에서 고뇌하며 부하를 통솔하는 것이 얼마나 어려운가를 이 영화는 보여준다.
