밴 와일더는 쿨리지 대학에 벌써 7년을 다니고 있다. 그리고 앞으로도 졸업을 할 계획이 없다. 대학에서 파티 플래너로서의 밴의 명성은 거의 전설적이다. 진지하고 성실한 학생 그윈 펄슨은 내키지 않지만 쿨리지 대학의 왕 밴 와일더의 취재를 맡는다. 밴의 아버지 밴스 와일더는 더 이상은 못봐준다며 아들의 학비를 끊기로 결정한다. 그러자 밴은 가장 친한 친구 허치와 외국인 교환학생 타지와 공모해서, 회심의 파티들을 계획한다. 즉, 즐기면서 학비 모금도 하는 그야말로 일석이조. 취재 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 밴의 세계속으로 뛰어 들어간 그윈은 뜻밖에도 밴 와일더의 신화 뒤에 감춰진 진실된 밴의 모습을 발견하게 된다.
