어느 날, 109명의 승객을 태운 비행기가 추락하는 대형사고가 발생한다. 이 사고로 대부분의 승객들이 사망하고 10명의 승객들만이 살아 남는다. 끔찍한 사고에서 생존한 승객들의 트라우마 치료를 위해 재난후유증 치료사 클레어 (앤 해서웨이)가 긴급 투입되고, 대부분의 생존자들은 사고의 후유증으로 고통스러워하며 치료에 적극적인 반면 에릭 (패트릭 윌슨)이라는 환자는 사고조차 당하지 않은 사람처럼 여유 있는 반응을 보이며 클레어의 치료에 소극적으로 임한다. 그의 이상 행동에 묘한 호기심을 느낀 클레어는 에릭을 직접 찾아가 일대일 면접 치료를 시작하고 그러던 중 상담을 받던 생존자들이 하나 둘씩 사라지는 사건이 발생하자 클레어는 비행기 사고에 알려지지 않은 비밀이 있음을 직감하는데..

1964년 아일랜드의 시골마을, 네 명의 여성이 교회와 가족으로부터 버림받고 잔혹하고 비인간적인 막달레나 수녀원으로 보내진다. 그곳에서 그들은 자신의 죄를 참회할 것을 강요 당한다. 하지만 그들의 죄라는 것은 미혼모거나 너무 예쁘거나 못생겼다는 것, 너무 똑똑하거나 멍청하다는 것, 순결을 잃어버린 강간의 희생자라는 어불성설의 것들이다. 그들은 죄 값을 치러야 한다는 이유만으로 비인간적이며 부당한 노동을 강요 당한다. 소녀들은 재치를 발휘하여 위협으로부터 잠시 벗어나지만, 과연 노예와 별반 다르지 않은 상황에서 모든 것을 이겨낼 수 있을지는 의문이다. 분노와 절망 속에서 그들은 마침내 탈출을 꿈꾼다.

영국에 사는 파키스탄인 오마르는 좌파지식인이자 유명한 저널리스트인 아버지의 뜻에 따르지 않고 삼촌 나세르가 운영하는 세탁소의 관리인이 된다. 어느날 오마르는 삼촌 가족과 식사를 하고 돌아오는 길에 인종차별주의자 집단인 민족전선 갱들과 만나게 되는데 그 안에서 옛 친구 죠니를 만나게 된다. 이를 계기로 죠니 또한 오마르를 도와 세탁소 일을 하게 되면서 둘은 서로에게 꼭 필요한 존재가 된다. 하지만 오마르는 영국 사회에서의 성공을 위해 냉혈한 삼촌 나세르를 닮아간다.

사운드 오브 뮤직 등으로 유명한 뮤지컬의 거장 리차드 로저스(Richard Rodgers)와 오스카 해머슈타인 2세(Oscar Hammerstein II)의 브로드웨이 뮤지컬을 영화화한 작품. 2차 대전의 여파는 멀리 남태평양의 외딴 섬에까지 암운을 드리운다. 그러나 이곳의 원주민과 주둔군인 미해군들은 남국의 정치 속에서 밝게 살아간다. 한편, 미 해군 간호사인 넬리(밋지 게이너 분)는 프랑스인으로 농장을 경영하는 40대 홀아비 에밀(로자노 브라지 분)과 알게 되고, 부드럽고 온화한 성격의 그와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 넬리는 에밀이 폴리네시아인 아내와 사별했음을 알고 갈등에 휩싸인다. 자기 아닌 다른 여인과의 옛사랑에 대한 시기심에 괴로워하던 그녀는 부대장에게 전역을 요청한다. 그런 그녀의 갈등은 더욱 깊어만 가는데...

1차 세계대전 중, 독일군을 잡으러 나섰던 톰은 적군 병사를 생포하지만, 부상을 당한 채 오히려 포로가 된다. 그런데 톰의 동료는 톰을 버려두고 적군 병사를 무사히 인도해 전쟁영웅이 된다. 한편, 독일군 의사는 톰을 치료하면서 모르핀을 과다 투여하고, 결국 톰은 모르핀에 중독되고 만다. 마침내 퇴역했지만 대공황기를 맞은 톰은 여기저기를 떠돌며 직장을 구하기 위해 애쓴다. 고전기 갱스터영화의 원형인 "공공의 적"(1931)으로도 유명한 웰먼이 대공황기를 배경으로 잘못된 영웅숭배, 자본주의, 공산주의, 노사관계, 약물중독 등 묵직한 주제를 두루 풀어냈다.

이브는 멕시코시티 최고급 호텔의 메이드다. 영화는 손님이 떠난 방을 청소하고 침대를 정돈하고 욕실용품을 구비하는 그녀의 업무를 현미경으로 바라보듯 관찰한다. 종종 손님들이 두고 간 물건을 발견하기도 하고 또 어떤 손님들의 특별한 부탁을 들어주기도 하지만, 그녀의 일상은 익명의 손님들과 호텔 방 사이에서 무미건조하게 채워진다. 호텔은 마치 현대 멕시코 사회를 축소해놓은 듯한 공간 같다. 릴라 아빌레스의 데뷔작 는 호텔이라는 계급사회 가장 밑바닥에 있는 이브를 호텔의 다른 직원 그리고 손님들과 병치시키면서 그녀의 사회적, 계급적 위치를 끊임없이 환기시킨다. 한편 카메라는 이브가 일하는 모습을 숭고함이 느껴질 정도로 집요하고 정교하게 포착하면서, 관객들로 하여금 그녀의 노동을 또 다른 관점에서 바라보게끔 한다. 승진 하나만을 바라보고 묵묵히 성실하게 일해 오던 이브가 호텔 바깥으로 나오는 영화의 마지막은 오늘날 여성 노동자의 현실에 대해 영화가 던지는 어떤 강력한 코멘트처럼 다가온다. Gracinda, a young laundry washer, lives with her godfather, "Uncle" Jacinto, and together they run a family business, doing the laundry for residents of Lisbon in their small village in the outskirts of that city (Canecas). Unfortunately, the business is not going very well, but that changes when Gracinda decides to go to the city to try to convince Chico, "Uncle" Jacinto's son, with whom she is in love, to return to the village and give new life to the business. The village is preparing for the annual festivities and a dispute erupts between "Uncle" Jacinto and his business rival , the widow Quiteria, when each of them invites different bands to play at the same time during the party and dances

After she is humiliated when Loe, one of her employees, is startled by the discovery of her prosthesis during foreplay, she imprisons him in the laundry plant. As Loe is slowly dying in imprisonment, Martje loses contact with reality and starts imagining having a family with him.

The Graham Vicks production of FALSTAFF opened the new Covent Garden Royal Opera House, and was not to everybody's taste; the garish primary colours of the costumes. The staging is effective--the complicated counterpoint of the ensembles is reflected in unobtrusive blocking that keeps the vocal lines clear and separate, especially in the final fugue. Bryn Terfel's Falstaff is a memorable creation, self-mocking and self-aggrandising at the same time--so much so, in fact, that he almost does not need the vast prosthetic body he has to wear for the part. Desiree Rancatore is an admirably sweet-toned Nanetta; Bernadette Manca di Nissa an appropriately sardonic Mistress Quickly; Roberto Frontali as Ford, in his Act 2 scena, perfectly distils and parodies every jealousy aria ever written, including Verdi's own. Haitink's conducting is exemplary in the lyrical passages, gets almost everything out of the fast and furious comic sections.

Eastern Borderlands, 1919. The Bolsheviks, taking part in the Polish-Russian war, appear at the Granowski manor house. It's a story based on the war of 1920, which ended with the Battle of Warsaw going down in history as the "Miracle on the Vistula". The film was commissioned by the Propaganda Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs and has survived only in fragments (just 53 minutes out of the 2-hour-long film).
