영화의 효과 음악을 녹음하는 잭 테리는 고성능 마이크를 가지고 여러가지 소리를 수집하던 중 우연히 사고가 나서 강물에 빠진 차를 발견하고 차안에서 샐리라는 여자를 구한다. 한편 차 안에는 이미 숨이 끊어진 남자가 같이 있었는데, 그는 정치권의 유명한 선거 후보자로 당선이 거의 확실시되었던 사람이었다. 이상함을 느낀 잭은 자신의 고성능 마이크에 남겨져있는 당시의 소리를 들어보고 차 사고가 나기 바로 전 총소리가 울렸다는 것을 알게 된다. 정치인이 살해된 것이 확실한 가운데 살인자는 샐리마저 살해하려들지만 잭의 방해로 실패하게 되는데.
