잡일을 하는 떠돌이 숀은 별 재주도, 미래도, 되고 싶은 것도 없는 평범한 청년이다. 페인트공으로 일하던 어느 날 일터에서 우연히 살인을 청탁받은 숀은 뭔가 큰일을 통해 자신의 배짱을 보일 기회라도 만났다는 듯, 우쭐거리며 그 제안을 받아들인다. 자신과 전혀 무관한 시의회의 회계사를 연습도 상상도 해보지 못한 희한한 방법으로 살해하는데 성공한 숀은 그러나 특별한 성취감도 죄의식도 느끼는 것 같아 보이지 않는다. 하지만 가끔씩 밤에 찾아오는 악몽 속에서 피로 더럽혀진 자신의 손과, 혼자 남은 회계사의 아름다운 아내에 대한 욕망이 계속해서 그를 괴롭힌다. 그러나 그에게 살인을 청부한 자들이 마련한 대가는 숀을 외딴집에 짐승처럼 가두고 매일 정해진 시간에 치명적인 폭력을 가하는 것이었다. 숀은 이제 비로소 ‘폭력’과 진정한 교류를 시작한다.

The injustice of poverty is emphasized by the fact that Tessa's school chums are the children of very wealthy parents, and the only way to fit in is by lying. Add the gorgeous and expensive trappings of their Santa Barbara community, and you get a portrait of cruel contradictions seen through the eyes of a young girl.
