The story takes place during the colonization of the Laurentian region in Quebec towards the end of the 19th century (approx. 1885-90), near Sainte-Adèle. An unscrupulous man, Séraphin Poudrier, dominates the small community using his wealth. Mayor of the village, he will marry Donalda Laloge, after her father, unable to repay his debt, gives her to him in marriage. Donalda, a gentle and submissive woman who was promised to the handsome Alexis Labranche, rather, he will live his life according to the wishes of this petty and contemptuous miser, but will never let his situation get him down.

A father's love is not enough to keep his dreams and his family together in this drama. Joe Aiello (Tony Nardi) is an Italian immigrant who settled in Montreal and opened a construction firm in the early '60s. Thirty years later, Tony's business is a solid success, and Tony dreams of passing this legacy along to his family. But Tony's wife has passed on, his son Nuccio (Hugolin Chevrette Landesque) is developmentally disabled, and his daughter Bennie (Michele-Barbara Pelletier) can't decide what she wants to do with her life, dropping out of college against her father's wishes shortly before she is to graduate. Despite his disappointment with Nuccio and his exasperation with Bennie, Joe has a fierce love for his children, but Bennie feels that her father's affection is starting to crush her more than it nurtures her.

파월 항공사 및 파월 방위 산업체의 대표 파월은 카지노 체육관에서 헤비급 챔피언 권투 경기를 주최한다. 이 경기에 커크랜드 국방장관이 초청된다. 애틀랜틱 시티의 강력계 형사 릭 샌토로(니콜라스 케이지)와 게빈 던(게리 시니즈)은 국방장관의 경호를 맡는다. 1라운드 경기 중 던은 빨강 머리를 한 수상한 여자의 신원을 확인하기 위해 자리를 비운다. 이 때를 틈타 은발 머리의 미녀가 국방장관에게 접근하여 뭔가를 건네려 한다. 바로 그때 헤비급 챔피언 타일러가 다운되고 두 방의 총성이 울리며 장관이 쓰러진다. 팔에 부상을 입은 은발의 여자는 감쪽 같이 사라진다. 수사를 위해 방송실의 녹화 테이프를 검색하던 샌토로는 타일러가 의도적으로 다운됐음을 알아낸다.
