One of the most wildly creative filmmakers working in Japan today, Ishii Katsuhito seems to take joy in dropping whimsical, unpredictable works onto unsuspecting audiences. His last film Nice no Mori (a.k.a. Funky Forest), an omnibus offering co-directed with Ishimine Hajime and Miki Shinichiro, was an ode to pure, unadulterated insanity. The Mole Brothers and their Beatles hairdos serve up plenty of chaos and laughter in this riotous seven-episode series that is just about required viewing for fans of the film. Ishii returns once again to his animation roots, and the results are as head-scratchingly brilliant as ever. 도쿄 외곽의 조용한 시골 마을의 하루노 가족의 소소한 일상이 시작된다. 엄마는 주방 식탁에서 아이들을 키우느라 그만뒀던 애니메이션 작업을 다시 시작하려 하고, 아버지는 가족을 상대로 종종 연습을 하는 최면술사이다. 사춘기 소년인 아들 하지메는 새로 전학 온 여학생에게 풋사랑의 들뜨는 감정을 품게 되고, 전직 유명 만화가인 괴짜 할아버지의 행동들은 이 가족의 특별한 일상 중 빙산의 일각만을 보여줄 뿐이다. 막내 사치코는 엄청난 크기를 하고 있는 자신의 판박이가 시도 때도 없이 나타나 고민이고, 도시에서 사랑의 기억을 달래기 위해 고향을 찾은 외삼촌 아야노도 마찬가지. 이 가족의 평범한 듯 특별한 일상이 무한한 상상력과 함께 엉뚱하고도 따뜻하게 펼쳐진다.
