Wang, a womanising businessman miles away from home, makes it a sport to seduce young women. After one of his conquests got pregnant with his child and died after the abortion, one after another of his lovers are found murdered. It is only when he is arrested and convicted for these crimes that he finds himself embroiled in a plot of revenge. Based on the work of Japanese novelist Togawa Masako which was previously adapted by director Nakahira Kō into The Hunter’s Diary (1964 in Japan) and the Hong Kong version Diary of a Lady-killer (1969), Ho Fan’s remake, his third film for Shaw Brothers as director, is a stylistic tour de force and a more authentic rendering than the 1969 version, grippingly suspenseful and provocative with clever shots, dark humour, and sophisticated treatment of contemporary attitudes about sexual liberation, exploring the conflicts over human nature and desire. 문성주를 중심으로 송나라를 복원시키려는 저항세력은 그가 원나라의 대원사에게 체포되자 구출계획을 세운다. 저항세력은 정체를 알 수 없는 협객 이호주의 도움으로 감옥 안으로 들어가는데 성공하지만 성주는 보이지 않는다. 한국배우 김기주가 대원사로 등장해 무게감 있는 연기를 펼치고 합작영화의 단골 홍콩 스타 로례이가 이호주로 등장한다. 무협영화의 볼거리와 궁중사극의 긴박감을 적절하게 조화시키고 있다. 몽고족은 송나라를 무너뜨리고 대원제국을 수립한다. 망국의 우승상 문성주는 군대를 이끌고 끝까지 저항했으나 결국 체포되어 옥에 갇힌다. 그러나 송나라인들은 문성주를 구하여 송나라를 재건코자 동지를 규합한다. 이에 처녀의 몸인 영아도 문성주를 구하려 앞장서게되며 방랑의 검객 이호주, 역시 영아와 송나라를 위하여 원군과 투쟁하게 된다. 한편 원군 총수인 백안은 이들을 체포하여 공을 세우려하지만 번번이 실패하고 만다. 마침내 이들 우국지사들은 옥을 습격, 성주를 찾아내나 성주는 이미 죽어있고 영아만이 살아남아 망국하에 몸부림친다.
