Childhood pals Javed (Rishi Kapoor) and Akhtar (Jeetendra) will do anything for each other, but their loyalties are tested when they fall in love with the same woman. For Javed, it's love at first sight when he meets the beautiful Firdaus. But when her father insists she marry the wealthy Akhtar instead, the loyal young man agrees -- but only to help out Javed by quickly divorcing her. Now that he's seen her, though, that may prove difficult.

When a Police inspector is killed by a band of thugs, his grieving father Samsher Singh seeks justice. Pratap Singh has left behind a pregnant widow, who dies in chidbirth, leaving Samsher to bring up the child Kunal. The transformation of Samsher Singh (a locomotive engine driver) into Sobhraj, multi millionaire and owner of a vast network of business. Kunal is brought up by Abu Baba, a servant of Sobhraj to be honest, upright, and very independent minded. Durga, the daughter of a former employee of Sobhraj, who is serving time and Kunal fall in love. This not acceptable to his grandfather, though Abu Baba approves of the relationship. Disaster strikes when an attempt is made to separate the lovers. The life of Samsher Singh alias Sobhraj begins to unravel from here. How Kunal's ethical upbringing by his foster-father, and his financial and business circumstances of his grandfather meet in a titanic conscience clash and how he resolves matters is at the nexus of the plot.

Ajay alias Munna Babu is a semi-senile, gentle but naive young man who has a wealthy family estate. His employees and alleged well-wishers conspire against him and introduce him to his long-estranged mother, Shakuntala, and brother, Vijay. Munna is overjoyed, not knowing that they are devious impersonators. This joy is quite short-lived, as they soon show their true colors, and Munna gets killed. His restless spirit seeks out his real brother and appeals to him to avenge his death. Vijay, at first, thinks he is hallucinating, but when his mother confirms that he indeed had a twin brother, he agrees to accompany Munna's spirit back to where he was killed, and thus assist him complete his vengeance. Things do not go as planned, and Vijay himself becomes their victim, and may face the very same fate as Munna.

Joseph, now known as Tripathi, comes to know that Ravi is Ghanshyam's son, and devices a scheme that will bring certain death to Ghanshyam and his family.

Thakur Ranjit Singh buys the enslaved Kajal's freedom and gives her the status of a daughter-in-law... much to the disgust of his uncle, Jasbir. When the sleazy Shakal turns up and arranges a secret meeting with Kajal, Ranjit believes that he has caught his beloved being unfaithful. He exacts a fearful retribution. Obligingly, Jasbir destroys the evidence. Ranjit finds himself being plagued by the restless spirit of Kajal as well as a suspicious policeman. Asha lives a poor lifestyle along with her widowed dad, is in love with aspiring doctor Raj Kumar, and hopes to marry him someday. When Raj announces that he is traveling abroad to study, she decides to wait for him, but her father, on his deathbed, makes her promise to marry Simla-based Gopal Chopra, who is the son of his friend, Shyamlal, to which Asha agrees. Gopal gets a promotion and re-locates to Bombay but continues to remain in touch with his family. Then the past is re-visited when Raj, now a doctor, comes to live in their neighborhood. Their idyllic lives are shattered when Raj is arrested for killing a man named Mangatram who was blackmailing Asha for hiding a secret from the rest of her family.

Bombay-based Anil Agarwal lives a very wealthy lifestyle, mostly from wealth, estate, and business inherited from his grandfather, along with his wife, Anju, and a school-going son named Jimmy. One day while at the beach a stranger named Vijay Sohni, rescues Jimmy from drowning, refuses to accept any compensation, but is invited to live in the palatial house of the Agarwals indefinitely, which he accepts. Anil's garage owner friend, Daver, cautions him against Vijay, as he has been seen making advances to Daver's wife, Suman. Anil decides to pay close attention to Vijay, and does find him getting closer and closer to Anju. He decides to ask Vijay to leave, and even gives him some money, when Daver bursts in accusing Vijay of having an affair with Suman, an argument ensues, which regresses into fisticuffs, Anil hits Vijay on his head which leads to his death. Daver disposes of the body, and both decide not to tell anyone about Vijay's disappearance...

Aarti, a dancer, is grieving over the death of her lover, Chandan. She is befriended by Inder who eventually falls in love with her. But a revelation about their connected past leaves them in shock.

Ahmed and Mohan Kumar Saxena are petty thieves, and con-men. They career is spent as false witnesses near the Bombay courts, where they get paid a set sum of rupees for false depositions. This changes when they meet and are influenced by Kabir Das, and decide to go straight. They find that it's virtually impossible to earn a living as honest citizens. Then Kabir Das is arrested and imprisoned by a murder he claims he did not commit, and the duo promise to help him, and find out who the real killer is, but they themselves end up getting in trouble.

Dr. Uday Shankar is a kind-hearted Hindu gentleman who has chosen to practise medicine in a village rather than make money by working in a large city. As a good Hindu, he decides to raise the boy in the religion of his own parents, and Husain thus grows up to be a practising Muslim living in the backdrop of a Hindu household. Everyone loves the new addition to the household and Husain also is deeply attached to his new family.

Two con men, Vijay and Ajay, manage to hoodwink a number of wealthy people as well as Police Commissioner Khanna. Their lives undergo many changes, after a caper at a casino, where Vijay is recognized by a gangster named P.K., who decides to separate the two friends by claiming that Ajay is his long-lost son; insinuating that Vijay has not been completely forthright with Ajay; and implicating him in the murder of a male named Mac. Wealthy and influential Hindurao Dhonde Patil finds a homeless drunk, brings him home, looks after him, feeds him, finds a room for him, gets him employed, calls him Master, and even finds a woman to look after him.
