둘째 아이를 임신 중인 가정 주부 클레어(안나벨라 사이오라 분)는 산부인과에 진찰받으러 갔다. 그런데 웬 응큼하게 생긴 의사란게 나타나 기분 나쁜 소리를 하면서, 장갑도 안낀 손으로 자기 몸의 중요 부분을 여기저기 주물럭 거리는게 아닌가! 기분이 아주 나빠져서 병원을 나선 클레어는 집으로 돌아와 아무리 목욕을 해도 기분이 개운치 않았고, 남편과 상의 끝에 그 의사를 고발하기로 했다. 그러자 웬걸, 자기말고도 그런 짓을 당한 여자들이 줄줄이 나타났다. 이런 짓이 탄로나자 그 의사는 죄책감 때문인지 자살해 버리고 만다. 그런데 문제는 그 의사에게도 임신한 부인이 있었다는 것이다. 아무 부족한 것 없이 행복하게 살던 의사의 부인 페이턴은 남편의 갑작스런 죽음으로 과부가 된 데다, 새로 집 짓느라고 빌린 돈을 갚을 수 없게 되어, 살던 집에서도 쫓겨나 알거지로 길바닥에 나앉았고, 설상가상으로 아기까지 유산이 된다. 이 모든 불행의 원인이 클레어라는 여자 때문이라고 생각하는 페이턴(Peyton Flanders: 레베카 드모레이 분)은 당연히 오뉴월에도 서리가 내릴 한을 품게 되었고, 보모로 가장해 클레어의 집에 들어간다. 그리고 계획한 대로 무시무시한 복수극이 시작된다.

출감을 눈앞에 둔 감옥수 지미(Jimmy: 제임스 벨루시 분)는 시카고 컵스 팀의 열렬한 팬인 야구광으로, 방송국 퀴즈에서 월드 시리즈 관람 티켓을 따게 되자 이를 참관하기 위해 동료 죄수들의 도움으로 탈옥하게 된다. 한편 광고회사 중역인 스펜서(Spencer Barnes: 찰스 그로딘 분)는 교활한 노사장의 지시로 일본인 시카모토(Sakamoto: 마코 분)의 광고를 따내려고 LA로 향한다. 그러나 그는 공항에서 자신의 신용카드와 별장 열쇠 그리고 업무 내용이 기록된 수첩을 잃어 버리게 되고 그 수첩을 지미가 줍게 된다. 그러자 지미는 수첩을 돌려주고 사례금을 받기 위해 스펜서의 별장에 찾아가나, 때마침 LA지역 광고부 직원이 그를 스펜서로 오인하여 지미는 졸지에 스펜서 역할을 맡게 되나 결국 계약은 깨지고 만다. 한편 수첩을 잃어버려 천신만고 끝에 별장을 찾아온 스펜서는 지미를 만나자 그동안의 자신의 인생이 오직 출세의 조이던 사업, 애정 그리고 탈옥 등의 모든 문제들 거뜬히 해결하게 된다.

일탈에 대한 호기심이 빠져나올 수 없는 파멸의 길로 이어지는 이야기. 마이클(제임스 스페이더)는 유능한 증권분석가로 사회적 출세는 이루었지만 그에겐 일상으로부터 탈출하고자하는 욕망이 있다. 이 욕망은 그가 한 술집에서 알렉스(로브 로)를 만나면서 분출되기 시작한다. 규범에 얽매이지 않은 채 마음내키는 대로 살아가는 알렉스. 그는 마이클의 집에 같이 머물면서 술취한 마이클과 함께 편의점까지 털기도 하고, 마이클의 회사경쟁자를 찾아가 폭행을 가하는 등 조금씩 정상수위를 넘는 행동을 한다. 이에 뭔가 불안함을 느낀 마이클은 알렉스에게 떠나 줄 것을 부탁한다. 하지만 알렉스는 악마적 본색을 드러내며 보란듯이 마이클 집의 물건들을 모조리 없애버린다. 끝내는 클럽에서 만난 여자 클레어를 살해해 마이클의 집에 시체를 남겨놓는 짓까지 한다. 공포의 도가니에 빠져들게 된 마이클은 알렉스를 유인하여 그의 자백을 몰래 녹음한 뒤 그를 살해하고 자수한다.
