샐러리맨 생활 20여 년만에 이사 자리에 올랐다가 사장에게 덤벼든 죄로 해고된 더플러(George Dupler: 진 핵크만 분)는 회사측의 배려로 계열 회사 쇼핑 센터의 야간 지배인으로 겨우 살아남는다. 완벽주의자인 아내 헬렌(Helen Dupler: 다이안 래드 분)은 갑작스런 남편의 좌천을 못견뎌하며 사장에 사과하라고 채근하지만 사장은 그를 만나 주지도 않는다. 밤낮이 뒤바뀐 생활에다 강도와 깡패들이 날뛰는 가운데 목숨을 걸고 일해야 하는 그는 샐러리맨의 애환을 뼈저리게 느끼며 자유롭게 자기 작품을 만드는 발명가의 꿈을 키워간다. 친척의 장례식에서 만난 아들의 피아노 교사 체릴(Cheryl Gibbons: 바바라 스트라이잰드 분)은 그의 아내와는 달리 자신의 야성적인 성격을 인정하고 도시에 드물게 살아있는 야생마라고 북돋아 주어 더플러는 오랜만에 삶에 용기를 얻게 된다. 남편의 좌천으로 상심한 아내 헬렌은 더플러가 새 직장에 정을 못들이고 방황하자 별거를 제안한다. 억울하게 별거를 당한 더플러는 냉각기를 갖고 재결합을 하라는 변호사의 말에 솔깃해 별거수당을 지불한다는 합의문에 서명한다. 어느날 갑자기 감독을 나온 회사의 젊은 간부는 더플러의 근무 태도가 마음에 들지 않는다며 모욕을 주자 그는 사표를 던진다. 집에서도 쫓겨난 그는 허름한 공장을 세얻어 지내며 밤에는 레스토랑의 웨이터 노릇을 하고 낮에는 발명에 전념하는데...

Barbara gets secret plastic surgery in Switzerland in an attempt to save her marriage to Mark, but he doesn't seem interested in meeting her. She checks in to a ski resort to wait for Mark, and begins getting attention from young men. Her daughter tries to warn her that even though she has had the surgery it might be too late for her marriage, but she clings to the hope that Mark will come back once he sees her new look. Meanwhile, she must decide whether or not have an affair with a young man she's met.
