1993년 5월 미국의 아칸소 주 웨스트 멤피스 지역에 살인사건이 발생한다. 크리스토퍼 바이어스, 스티비 브랜치, 마이클 무어 등 보이 스카우트 어린이 3명이 배수관에서 손발이 묶인 채 발가벗겨진 변사체로 채 발견됐다. 동네의 10대 소년 3명이 용의자로 검거되고, 그들은 제대로 된 증거 하나도 없이 체포된다. 그들이 범인으로 몰린 이유는 메탈을 듣고, 호러 소설을 읽는다는 이유였다. 검찰은 범행이 일종의 사탄 의식이라는 논지를 폈고, 마을 사람들은 소년들을 악마 숭배자로 몰아넣었다. 역시 마을 주민이었던 배심원들은 용의자인 아이들을 좋지 않게 생각했으며 결국 그들은 사형과 무기징역 형을 받는다. 이들의 항소는 10년 넘도록 번번이 받아들여지지 않았으나 2007년 DNA 검사 결과 이들 3명의 혐의를 입증하는 증거는 나오지 않고 범행 현장에 다른 사람들이 있었을 가능성이 제기되자 사건은 전기를 맞았다.
