구로사와 아키라 감독의 유작. 일본 작가 우치다 햣켄(1889-1971)의 삶을 바탕으로 만들어진 영화로, 아무것도 남지 않는 시대를 견디는 낙천성에 대해 이야기한다. 가가와 교코의 리액션 연기가 가장 정점을 이루는 영화로, 구로사와 아키라 감독은 미야자키 하야오와의 대담에서 에서의 가가와 교코의 연기는 완벽해서 전혀 지시할 것이 없었다”라고 말했다. (2014년 제16회 서울국제여성영화제)

이 영화의 주인공은 일본 나가사키에 살고있는 어느 노파이다. 그녀는 나가사키에 투하된 원자폭탄으로 인해 남편을 잃었고 그 후 40년의 세월을 홀로 살아가고 있었다. 여름 방학을 맞이하여, 4명의 손자가 그녀를 방문하고 손자들은 한 번도 만나본 적이 없는 할아버지에 대해 이야기해 달라고 조른다. 그녀는 오랜 세월 동안 잊고 지냈던, 하지만 늘 마음 한 구석에 자리잡고 있던 남편에 대한 추억을 떠올리게 되고 손자들에게 이야기를 시작한다. 그리고 그녀의 이야기를 따라 원자폭탄이 투하된 1945년 8월, 일본의 참상이 펼쳐지는데...

Originally released in Japan as "The Return of Godzilla" in 1984, this is the heavily re-edited, re-titled "Godzilla 1985". Adding in new footage of Raymond Burr, this 16th Godzilla film ignores all previous sequels and serves as a direct follow-up to the 1956 "Godzilla King of the Monsters", which also featured scenes with Burr edited into 1954's "Godzilla". This film restores the darker tone of the original, as we witness the nuclear destruction of giant lizard terrorizing Japan.

1954년, 고지라는 옥시전 디스트로이어로 산화되었다. 그러나 계속되는 핵실험으로 어느날 도시에 나타난 쇼키리스라는 바닷니가 나타나는데 쇼키리스가 갑자기 출몰하던 건 고지라가 나타났기 때문이다. 하지만 일본 정부는 고지라의 부활은 아직 인정할 수 없다며 진실을 은폐하는 행위를 하지만 얼마 뒤 고지라가 도로를 부수며 부활하며 결국 일본 정부는 고지라의 부활을 공식적으로 인정한다. 30년만에 돌아온 파괴신 고지라는 건물을 부수고 다리를 부수는 등 각종 악행을 저지른다, 결국 정부는 고지라에 대비해 제작한 신무기, 슈퍼 X를 출동시켜 고지라의 활동을 어느 정도 정지시키고, 방위군은 고지라를 화산으로 유도하여 화산을 폭발시키려는 작전을 세운다. 그러나 러시아는 고지라를 죽이기 위해 도쿄 본토에 핵폭탄을 떨어뜨리려 한다. 결국 러시아의 무모한 작전으로 고지라는 다시 회복되고 원자력 발전소를 부수어 에너지를 충전시킨다. 방위군은 다시 슈퍼 X를 출동시켜 고지라를 멈추려 하지만 고지라의 열선으로 정리된다. 이후 방위군은 고지라를 화산으로 유도시켜 화산을 폭발시켜 고지라를 화산에 묻어버린다.

Suicide has long been used as a form of social protest in Japan. In this film, set in 1703, samurai culture is being transformed by the emergence of a new merchant class. Elements of the social contract are beginning to unravel, and some unscrupulous people took undue advantage of these changes before the social order was re-created. In this story, a rich merchant gives his clerk an I.O.U. instead of wages. When the impoverished clerk presents the paper to the merchant at the agreed upon time asking for payment, the man flies into a rage and pretends he never wrote it and claims the clerk is trying to defraud him. Then he sets his henchmen on the clerk to administer a beating.

Charged with insubordination for punching a superior, Sergeant Kosugi is shipped to China in the last desperate days of the Second World War. In 1980, a giant planetoid named Gorath is discovered to be on a collision course with Earth. Even though it is smaller than Earth, its mass is huge enough to crush the Earth and destroy it. A mission sent to observe Gorath is destroyed after all the orbiting ships are drawn into the planetoid. A later mission is sent to observe and the crew barely leaves before suffering the same fate. However Astronaut Tatsuo Kanai is left in a catatonic state due to his near death experience. The Earth's scientists then come up with a desperate plan to build giant rockets at the South Pole to move Earth out of Gorath's path before it is too late.

The film is a sequel of sorts to Toho's THE MYSTERIANS in the reprise of the Etsuko Shiraishi character of that film as its heroine. It was edited to 74 minutes for its American release.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, a brilliant tactician, is a loyal subject of the emperor, despite his grave misgivings about leading Japan's navy into war with the United States. He opposes the attack on Pearl Harbor, but, overruled, he leads his forces to the best of his ability.

Following the Second World War, the lives of various people in a poverty-stricken area of Tokyo are entertwined. Pachinko parlor girls, shoeshine boys, a maker of costume jewelry, and a streetcorner artist all struggle to make their livings and to find happiness in difficult surroundings.
