주인공 잭은 부모가 누구인지 모르고 출생신분도 확실치 않지만 신랑감으로서 좋은 조건을 갖춘 총각이다. 도시에서는 어니스트라는 이름으로, 시골에 와서는 잭이라는 이름으로 이중 생활을 한다. 출생에 대해서는 잘 모르지만 진지하고 성실한 성품을 지니고 있었기에, 알저논의 사촌 그웬돌렌 마음을 사고 있었으며 잭도 그웬돌렌에게 마음을 두고 있었기에 그웬돌렌과 브렉널 부인이 알저논의 집으로 찾아온 날 청혼을 하게 된다. 이에 그웬돌렌은 어니스트의 청혼을 흔쾌히 승낙하는데 이유는 바로 그의 이름이 어니스트라는 사실 단 하나 때문이었다. 하지만 이들의 사랑을 허락을 않고 반대를 하고 나서는 브렉널 부인, 그 이유는 어니스트가 출생신분이 불분명한 빅토리아 역에 버려졌던 고아 출신이었음이었다. 한편 늘 즐거움을 추구하는 알저논 역시 잭으로부터 그의 후견인인 세실리 양에 대해 알게 되고 알저논은 세실리에게 마음을 빼앗기고 다시 만나기로 마음먹는다. 알저논은 잭의 동생인 어니스트인 척 하고 잭의 본가가 있는 허트포드셔로 간다. 세실리 또한 수수께끼의 인물인 어니스트를 평소에 만나고 싶어했는데, 알저논은 어니스트인 척 하면서 세실리에게 앞으로는 망나니짓을 하지 않겠다는 다짐을 하게 되고...

Set in the 1950s, it follows the progress of twenty year old Jenny Bunn, as she moves from her family home in the North of England to a London suburb to teach primary school children. Jenny is a traditional Northern working-class girl whose striking good looks are in sharp contrast to her prosaic upbringing, and to her strong belief that a girl should preserve her virginity until her wedding night. Because of her attractiveness, Jenny's views on virginity and marriage cause conflicts. The film centres on the (increasingly desperate and cruel) attempts of Patrick Standish, a 30 year old schoolmaster at the local grammar school, to seduce Jenny, against a backdrop of his skirmishes with his school authorities and with the shabby, suburban middle class milieu in which the film is set.

파리의 마약 수사 기관에서 일하는 자비에 롬바드는 자신이 보는 앞에서 가족들을 무참하게 살해한 범인들을 직접 심판하여 해고된 후 심신이 모두 황폐해진 상태에서 런던으로 건너가 사립탐정 일을 하며 생활한다. 낯선 도시 런던의 좁은 아파트에서 금붕어와 살면서, 바람난 아내를 잡아달라는 남편들의 요청으로 하고 있는 사립탐정 일은 벌이가 의외로 괜찮은 편이다. 그러던 어느날 롬바드는 전직 동료의 처가집이자 오스트리아 제화업을 하는 부유한 집안에서 행방불명된 아들 레온을 찾아달라는 사건을 의뢰받는다. 그는 크리스마스 시즌이라 조사비용과 수수료를 많이 챙길 수 있다는 생각으로 그 사건을 맡는다. 롬바드는 실종된 레온의 아파트를 둘러보다가 레온이 1년전부터 마약중독에 걸려 있었고 그의 실종이 아동매매춘 조직과 관련이 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 레온의 여자친구로부터 건네받은 비디오로부터 성폭행을 당하는 아이들의 실상을 알게 되고 아동매매춘 범죄 조직과 직접 부딪치게 된 롬바드는 평소 가깝게 지내던 창녀 나탈리를 이용해 매춘 고객으로 가장하여 잠입 수사를 펼친다. 하지만 곧 의심을 받게 되고 롬바드를 도와준 나탈리는 끝까지 그의 이름을 밝히지 않은 채 살해당한다. 결국 그는 혼자 힘으로 계속해 사건을 파헤치기로 하고 멕시코에서 두 개의 얼굴을 가진, 아동들을 돌보면서 한 편으로는 그들을 매매하는 프리드만을 찾아낸다. 하지만 프리드만은 롬바드를 알고 있었고, 사건은 갈수록 꼬리를 물고 이어지는데...
