1940년대 샌프란시스코, 혼란의 중국에서 도망쳐 나온 이민 1세대 중국인인 준은 몇달 전에 어머니를 잃고, 중국을 방문하려고 한다. 준은 어머니가 중국을 침략한 일본군을 피해 달아나다 남겨놓고 온 쌍둥이 언니를 만나러 가려고 한다. 중국으로 가기 전에 준은 어머니가 속해있던 마작 모임인 "조이 럭 클럽"에 처음으로 참석, 어머니의 친구인 다른 아줌마들과 얘기를 나누면서 여덟 모녀의 삶의 과거와 현재를 이야기 한다. 이 준은 어머니의 고난을 모르고 자라다가 아줌마들의 이야기를 들으며 자신의 돌아가신 어머니와의 갈등을 해소하고 자신의 쌍둥이 언니를 더욱 만나고 싶은 마음이 들게 된다.

흥행물만 취급하는 헐리우드 메이저 영화사의 그리핀(팀 로빈스)은 어느날 시나리오 작가에게서 협박 엽서를 받는다. 그리핀은 다른 사람을 엽서를 보낸 사람으로 착각하여 사람을 죽이게 되고 그의 애인과는 사랑에 빠진다. 또한 유일한 목격자가 다른 사람을 지목하면서 그는 무죄를 선고받는다.
이 일이 있은 후 그는 지금까지 있었던 일을 담은 시나리오를 팔겠다는 또 다른 협박엽서를 받게 된다. 하지만 그것을 '플레이어'라는 제목으로 영화화할 것을 흔쾌히 수락하는데...

San Francisco's Richmond District. A widow welcomes the Chinese New Year. 62 years old, she wants to make a trip to China to pay last respects to her ancestors. A fortune teller has told her this is the year she'll die, and a daughter, Geraldine, remains unmarried. Geraldine's boyfriend lives in Los Angeles and she's not sure she's ready for marriage, nor does she want to leave her mother alone in her declining years. Mrs. Tan's cheerful brother-in-law, Uncle Tam, tries to help out.
