한나는 홀로 아들 짐을 키우며 농장을 꾸려 간다. 어떻게 해서든 고된 농장일에서 벗어나고 싶어하는 짐 때문에 모자의 관계는 편하지 않다. 결국 짐이 어머니의 뜻을 거스르고 연인 메리와 결혼하겠다고 하자, 한나는 둘을 떼어놓기 위해 짐을 입대시켜 버린다. 그런데 1차 세계대전에 참전한 짐이 작전 중에 사망하고 만다. 한편, 짐이 떠난 후, 메리는 임신 사실을 알게 되는데, 그녀는 누구에게도 알리지 않고 홀로 아들을 낳아 기른다. 몇 년 후, 한나는 전쟁에서 자식을 잃은 어머니들의 모임에서 주관하는 프랑스 여행에 참여한다. 자식들의 무덤을 찾아가는 이 특별한 여정 중 한나는 아들을 죽음으로 내몰았다는 씻을 수 없는 죄책감에 시달린다.
