중세 시대 서부 유럽 사회는 봉건 영주들 간에 영지를 둘러싼 분쟁이 끊임없이 일어났다. 그중에서도 특히 아놀피니라는 영주가 데리고 있는 용병대는 야만적이고 무식하지만 용감하기 짝이 없었다. 대장인 호크우드를 따르는 이들은 중요한 전투에서 공을 세워 신임을 한 몸에 받고 있었다. 어느 날, 아놀피니는 과거 자신의 영지였던 성을 탈환하는 전투에서 용병들이 승리한다면 성 안의 물건은 모두 전리품으로 가져도 좋다는 약속을 한다. 하지만 승리 후 성 안에서 약탈과 폭력을 자행하는 이들에게 정이 떨어진 아놀피니는 호크우드에게 그들을 멀리 쫓아낼 것을 명령한다.
