They walk to the nearest residence--where they are greeted by a suspicious and motley group of people who may or may not be part of a bizarre cult that lives in the area. 중년의 실직 가장 밥(브루스 존스)과 토미(릭키 톰린슨)는 집 근처 들판에서 양을 훔치지만 그들이 레스토랑에서 양고기를 파는 사이 밥줄인 밥의 고물밴이 사라진다. 밥은 일곱 살된 딸 콜린의 성찬식 옷을 사주기 위해 갖은 일을 다 해보지만 제대로 되는 일은 하나도 없다. 급기야 아내에게 거짓말을 하고 융자를 받지만 융자회사는 밥의 채무 변제 능력이 부족함을 알고 그 일을 사채 회사로 넘긴다. 사채 업자는 밥의 집에 와 아내 앤(줄리 브라운)을 협박하고 화가 난 밥은 그를 찾아나선다. 그러나 술에 취한 사채업자는 밥과의 싸움 중 차를 타고 도망가다 기둥에 부딪혀 죽는다. 밥은 신부를 찾아가 고해하지만 신부는 그에게 아무 말도 하지 말 것을 당부하고 그들은 콜린의 성찬식을 치른다. 경찰들이 밥의 집을 찾아왔다 그들이 교회에 있음을 알고 교회로 밥을 찾아온다. 교회를 나서다 밥은 경찰을 만나지만 경찰에게서 없어진 밴을 찾았다는 말을 듣는데...
