Ella Peterson works in the basement office of Susanswerphone, a telephone answering service. She listens in on others' lives and adds some interest to her own humdrum existence by adopting different identities for her clients. They include an out-of-work Method actor, a dentist with musical yearnings, and in particular playwright Jeffrey Moss, who is suffering from writer's block and desperately needs a muse.

70대가 된 주인공 마티가 미국 아이젠하워 대통령에게 자신의 지난 웨스트 포인트(미국 육군사관학됴)에서의 삶을 설명하는 장면으로 영화는 시작된다. 과거 웨스트 포인트에 취직하러 온 아일랜드 촌뜨기 마티. 웨이터로 취직한 마티는 서툰 솜씨로 접시를 자주 깨뜨리고, 결국 웨이터가 아닌 근무 병사로 입대하게 되는데...... 유명배우 타이론 파워가 주연한 웨스트 포인트를 무대로 한 영화라면 아마도 그가 훌륭한 사관생도가 되는 내용일거라고 예상하기 쉬운데 그건 아닙니다. 리처드 기어의 '사관과 신사' 같은 영화가 사관생도의 관점에서 전개되는 이야기라면 이 영화에서 타이론 파워가 연기한 마티 마허는 웨스트 포인트에 근무하는 근무병사 입니다. 원래 마티는 웨스트 포인트의 식당 웨이터로 취업을 한 아일랜드계 청년이었습니다. 그런데 접시를 많이 깨뜨리는 사고를 치고 결국 군인 신분으로 복무하게 되면서 교관역할도 하고 그랬는데 복무만기를 채우고 제대하려고 하는 상황이 될 때마다 뭔가 계속 머물러야 하는 사건들이 발생하고 그래서 계속 재복무를 이어가다가 결국 평생 '말뚝'을 박게 된 것입니다. 실제로는 어느 순간에 군인의 신분은 벗어난 상태에서 웨스트 포인트에서 계속 근무한 것이라고 알려졌는데 영화에서는 그런 부분은 슬쩍 넘어가고 있습니다.
