13년째 시청 자료과 만년 말단직원으로 근무중인 35살 소심한 노총각 ‘켄타로’는 반 히키코모리로 점심시간에는 꼭 집에 가서 점심식사를 할 만큼 사교성 부재, 융통성 제로인 결벽증 환자이다. 그런 그의 부모는 몰래 ‘켄타로’의 결혼 상대를 찾기 위해 맞선을 주선하지만 상대방의 부모는 ‘켄타로’의 신상서를 읽고는 거절을 하고야 만다.

일본 문화의 가장 유구한 전통 중 하나는 음식에 대한 담론이다. 주로 만화에서 즐겨 다루었던 음식이라는 소재는 국내에서 만화만큼 잘 알려져 있진 않지만 영화에서도 꾸준히 다루어져왔다. 는 일본 만화에서 자주 등장하는 전문가와 신인의 대결 구조를 차용하고 있는데, 재일교포 감독 구수연은 이러한 문화에 한국 음식이라는 색다른 소재를 끌어들이고 있다. 어릴 적 엄마의 비밀 소스로 만든 깻잎을 즐겨 먹고 자란 두 형제는 엄마의 갑작스런 죽음 이후 헤어져 전혀 다른 상황에 놓이게 된다. 형인 토라오는 한국식 고기 요리로 대결을 벌이는 TV 프로그램 ‘야키니쿠 배틀’에서 수많은 요리사들을 쓰러뜨리고 최강자로 군림하는 최고의 갈비구이 요리사로, 동생 타츠지는 곱창의 달인인 한노인 밑에서 작은 식당을 운영하며 대찬 여종업원과 함께 요리를 배우며 소박하게 살고 있다. 토라오의 레스토랑 체인이 한노인과 타츠지의 식당을 무너뜨리기 위해 음모를 꾸미면서 형과 동생은 자신도 모르는 사이 조금씩 서로를 향해 다가가기 시작한다. 된장찌개, 깻잎, 불고기, 곱창 등 우리나라에서는 그야말로 평범하기 짝이 없는 서민들의 음식이 이 영화에서 화려한 요리로 돌변하는 재미를 보는 것은 색다른 즐거움을 선사한다. 뮤직비디오나 CF를 연상시키는 현란한 카메라와 알록달록한 화면 속에서 의외로 음식 그 자체의 맛보다는 함께 밥을 먹는다는 것의 소중함을 일깨워주는 영화의 소박한 경구가 마음을 흔든다. Taku Shinjo spins this rural drama about ancient taboos and encroaching modernity. Takamine (Gitan Otsuru) is a big-city workaholic sent to a small remote island to seal a business deal. His predecessor almost managed to convince the island's 17 inhabitants to sell their stake and make way for a resort hotel -- that is, before he died under dubious circumstances. Takamine finds the islanders polite and kind but unwilling to discuss business; instead, they tell him to become an islander. So the city-slicker stuffed shirt loses his tie and starts to help the women plant and the men fish. He soon makes his acquaintance with Takako (Mitsuko Baisho), the widowed daughter of the island's chief. She lives alone with her crazed son who is kept Jane Eyre-style chained to a stake. One moon-lit night, their mutual attraction boils over, resulting in a naked, passionate roll on the beach.

On August 20, the postal telegraph office in Maoka suspended operations and nine of the twelve telephone operators committed suicide by taking potassium cyanide while the city was being invaded.
