The student Jan gets along better with animals than with people. The shy young man is particularly fond of snakes, some of which he keeps at home. The two fall in love when he meets the radical animal rights activist and environmental activist Alice at his university. Jan's life then begins to change suddenly. He is overwhelmed by his intense feelings and social life with Alice. From then on his perception begins to become distorted. Jan feels like she has to take active action against various threats. Although Alice supports him, he loses himself in his madness and love for her.

The investigative journalist Rommy Kirchhoff, together with his son Max, is looking for the disappeared lobbyist Paul Holthaus, who has negotiated several times in Cape Town on behalf of Lilian Norgren for their agricultural corporation Norgreen Life. Norgren makes it clear to Rommy that the search for the whistleblower is unwanted and puts her and the boy in danger.

When he realizes that he must finally take his life, and especially love, into his own hands, he turns to his janitor, Mr Müller. What Tom does not know: Müller was once a psychologist of the Stasi! In the so-called "Romeo" program, he prepared male agents to address women in Germany and make them available as a source.

독일을 초현실적 세계로 그려내는 영화. 흥미로운 소재를 찾지 못하고 있는 여성 다큐멘터리 감독, 노부인의 굳은 살을 제거한 후 정성스레 간직하는 발 관리사, 독일제 자동차에 탑승을 거부하는 부유한 커플, 강제수용소 단체 방문에 관심이 없는 역사학과 학생, 숲에서 까마귀를 훈련시키는 남자. 모든 인물이 가족 관계나 우연의 일치로 얽혀 있는 이 영화에서 언뜻 보면 세상은 평화롭고 사람들은 행복한 듯 보인다. 하지만 그들의 어두운 면모가 밝혀지면서, 평화와 지옥은 바로 가까이에 있음이 드러난다. 독일의 향토영화 장르에 대한 아이러니한 대조를 드러내는 "핀스터월드"는 신랄한 비평과 블랙유머의 진수를 보여준다.
